Yamaha 115 info

Finaddict

Question

Does anyone have any input on the Yamaha 115 4 stroke motors? Looking to purchase a boat with a 2001 model Yamaha on it and would like to hear from others that may have a similar model. Has anyone trolled with it? How does it perform on that low idle? Thanks for any info!

I have a 2002 Yammie 115 4 stroke on a 2002 Crestliner 1850 Sportfish. I am really impressed with the low trolling speed you can get with this motor. I don't know what you are looking at for a boat. Mine is heavy, and that may contribute to the slow speen. If I remember correctly, heading into a small chop, we were able to get to 1.4 mph, measured with a GPS.

Hope this helps.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses on this one.

I have used an '01 115 Yammy on a Alumcraft Trophy 175 for some years and it trolls excellent. If I recall it was great trolling speed right around 2.2 mph (or slower?). I couldn't believe that motor could troll that slow...very quiet and excellent performance.

People claim 4S motors are slower, don't plane the boat as easy, etc.. I disagree with that boat in particular.

Clearly one of the best outboard motors ever hung on a boat. Have owned all the rest at one time or another. Honda 4's are great but I take nothing away from this Yammie. Never falters.Starts instantly. Will push a pretty heavy boat as fast as any rational person wants to go. I would not hesitate to buy another one.

Thanks for the quick replies!!! It's sitting on a 17' Lund now. The gentleman that is selling it barely used it. It maybe has 50 hours on it. We're not speed freaks by no means! Just hoping it will will be slow enough to troll on Lake Michigan as well as other lakes for walleyes. Sounds like it should do the trick. Do you tend to change oil more frequently with the slow trolling or does the motor take it just fine?

I have the 02 115 4stoke Yammy on a 17 ft Lund and love it! I echo all the above info, never had to do a thing to mine. I get upper 40's gps mph on calm water and troll down to 2.0 to 2.2 gps mph, depending on how I adjust the trim.

Good question on the oil....I run quite a bit and troll a fair amount as well. I recall looking at mine towards the tail end of last year out of curiousity and it was clean!!

I had a 2001 and now own a 2004 Yamaha 115, both motors were on my Lund 1775 Pro-V. Great motors!

I run my motor every day and have had very few problems.

Oil changes should be done every 100 hours of use or at least every spring if you do not reach the 100 hour mark.

They say that the 4 strokes will use no oil between oil changes, but I have had to add 1qt. every 2 or 3 weeks to both of my motors.

Other then that they are great motors and troll cranks well.

2.0 to 2.5 mph average speed.

Have a 2003 115 Yammy 4-Stroke on the back of a 2003 Lund Angler 1700 SS and it has been flawless. 2.0- 2.2 is my gps average for trolling forward. I don't use this often as my big 24-volt on the bow serves me pretty well in most conditions.

Good luck and don't hesitate...its a Yamaha. You take the cover off mine and the motor still looks brand new...

Take care!

I also have a 115 Yamaha 4 stroke on a 17' Lund Explorer and it trolls down nicely and I get about 41-43 mph GPS out of it. I have ben very happy with this motor and have been with any yamaha I have ran.

Things are going very well! The avatar is a 15.5" I CPR'ed a couple winters ago...it was a good couple weeks of fishing that year as I had 6 fish going better than 14.5" and all were caught while chasing mid-January gills.

Our second child was born on November 15th... another boy and they both keep us very busy. I still get out about 1-2 times a week, it's not like the 4-5 times a week I fished before kids but that will likely change again in a few years as the boys get older.

I am headed over to SD and Bigstone next weekend to chase those pesky eyes! Hopefully we will have some luck...How are thing going over in good ol' Wisconsin? I heard some rumors that Jason bought a boat. Did you make it up to Canada last year?

Good to hear from you Andy! I hope to run into you sometime. If you are ever in the area visiting Jason, look me up. I am always in the mood to fish...

Take care!

My buddy has a 115 yamaha 4-stroke on the back of his 18 ft. Lund Explorer.

Very nice motor!!

Slow trolls nicely, yet gets out of the "hole" great too.. The best thing is how easy it is to talk to each other, even at high speeds.

Finaddict, what town in WI are you from??

We're from a little dinky town about 30 minutes southeast of Green Bay...due west of Two Rivers where we launch for salmon and bows. We've been going to MN for a few years ice fishing and loving it. This summer will be our first summer MN trip - headed to Cass for the first time in June. smile.gif

Thanks for all the responses... We know that historically the Yamahas are good motors. Tough part was finding a good boat without a Mercury motor on it. Had a new Merc once... will NEVER own one again.
