Whats the difference in a Z71 VS a 4X4

I wondering if anyone knows what features are different in a 2003 or 04 Chevy Z-71 1500 4X4 and a 2003 or 04 Chevy 1500 4X4 that does NOT have the "Z71" sticker. Is it just the "shocks, pan guard and sticker" as I have been told or?

5.3 liter V8 if it matters

I think the springs, shocks & skid plates. Motor, tranny & diff's should be the same

Can't say for sure on the 03 to 04 model. I ordered an 01 a few years ago and did the thorough research before doing so. The difference at that point in time was the suspension, skid plates, and you got a higher capacity air cleaner. The engine and drive train were the same. Good luck with your purchase, I've been very happy with mine. Don't overlook the diesel, that's the only thing I regret.

I think there is a front swaybar also. If you talk to a dealer or go to gm.com they should be able to help you.

Some also had tranny coolers on the Z71 and some of the 4x4s didn't.

locking rear differential is on the '04 z's as well

what does any1 think of locking rear differantial,, is it a worthwhile add on? maybe on a 4x2 but on 4x4,not sure it matters.

There are good things and bad thinga bout locking difs. I like that I don't have put the truck into 4 wheel to pull a boat out of a wet launch. I kind of don't like how in winter you either have traction or you don't with a locking rear, it steps out a lot because both tires are spinning, vs a non where only one wheel is spinning and keeps you on track much better, it take a bit of getting used to. Worth the money to me, but you are pretty much right, It makes much less difference IMO in a 4x4. I'll take 2 wheels doing work over one anyday.

I believe the z71 has independant suspension as opposed to a straight axle in front.

The newer Z71s might be a little different but...

-I've got a '99 new body style Sierra Z71.

-My buddy has a '00 Silverado 4x4.

The trucks are dang near identical, even the color is black. I can tell you his has 'blue' colored shocks and mine has 'red' colored shocks which I need to replace. Anybody recommend a good replacement. Mine has the skidplates under the front end, his doesn't. I've got Z71 stickers, his has 4x4 stickers. Other than that, I don't know what is different.

Does any manufacturer still put a solid front axle under the front end of there pickups?????? I'm 100% positive that is not the difference!

mnrstrider, they will only lock up to 30 mph then it goes back to the one wheel. otherwise th freeway could be a bit interesting....
