Can't wait to use bullheads this summer, buddy had a minnow trap out last summer in the backwater near his house and that's all he caught. We use mostly suckers otherwise, usually about 10-12" if we can find em.

PikeBay..

I see your from IA .. if sufish are legal, you cant beat them cut(channels) or live(flatheads). We cant use them in Minnesota.

Cutbait here I am always using something fresh. Sometimes suckers can be good in the cold water. Shiners, creek chubs, shad, mooneye, tullibees can all be very good. I have heard of some people having success on cut bullheads, but I havent done well personaly.

Live bait, bullheads and creek chubs are my top picks.. suckers do work sometimes and are easy to get at the bait shops around here. Large crayfish can be excellent too.

Cut bullheads havent ever really worked for me but you can use them half cut/half live...just slice open their bellies and they live for a long time still cut open. As far as the MN state fish it's the "golden bullhead" aka walleye. tongue.gif

I would use suckers if they were big and free and I also had bullheads along.

Funny you should mention cut bait for cats. because just a couple days ago I was in a store that had what was the favorite cut bait for cats where Im from. and the price is right. .99 cents a pound for a whole Mackerel It has a tough skin with solid meat so it stays on hook real well and sends out a good sent the catfish would realy go for. Mackerel is the choice bait for Cats in So.California. Im going to test it out here in a couple weeks. wink.gif

I actually use fresh shrimp often for channels. Cut bullies have work pretty good for me too, but they have to be fresh(still bleeding). Last season I found a pretty good spot for crayfish, so I'll be using them more.

Now for flats what I like bullies and creek chubs. Store bought suckers just don't seem to stay very active or alive.

Asked a local game warden about sunfish for bait he said you could use a walleye if want as long as count it as daily bag limit. sunnies and a BIG creek chub or red tailchub for me those big chubs move and call fish in we put 6 rods while fishin the chubs alwayS get nailed first DLK. IF YOU FIND A GOOD CHUBCREEK YOU ARE LUCKY THE BAIT IS ONE OF MAIN KEYS TO BIG FLATS. MAN DO I WISH IT WAS JUNE. DLK.

You dont live in Minnesota.. must be wisconsin?

We cant use sunfish here... or 6 rods.

Our laws arent very catfishermen friendly.

The place where I fish Cannel Cats has a bunch of bullheads there also. I take a light rod, baited with a worm and catch one in the backwaters. Then cut it up with a corn knife and bait a circle hook. When the bait is that fresh, the bullheads work pretty well.

Now that I think Back, several years ago when my girl friend worked at deli express and got lunch meat for a quater a pound, we took some for lunch while fishing the missi and ran out of normal bait, so I started putting hunks of salami on the hook and caught just as many cats as worm and minnows were getting. Go figure. grin.gif
