The Sheyenne is generally an underappreciated fishery (as are most rivers, but the Sheyenne particularly so). From one end of the river to the other it's got great fishing opportunities. I'd definitely give it a go and see what you can find.

Harvey,

The first three are right on the mark (walleyes, smallies, cats), but the "few others" is off by quite a bit. Very diverse river system. You'll find lots of others! However, there are some dandy walleyes and cats in that system. Put in time and effort and you'll reap many (and big) rewards.

The problem one runs into is while im up there bow hunting, then I think I also need to bird hunt and then maybe some fishing to.If Iam gone any more than I am now,my wife will think I left. There is never enough time to do it all,but I sure try. smile.gifsmile.gif

I believe another use on FM, njsimonson, fishes the Sheyenne River close to Valley City and has gotten some very nice small mouth out of the river... I haven't fished it... but do see a lot of people attempting to fish it by the dam in Lisbon and slightly further downstream with varying success. I think they mostly catch Carp... but I've never paid real close attention.

There isn't a fishable population of smallies here in Fargo. It's approaching an hour's drive before the numbers start to get decent. Might be isolated pockets of them here and there a little closer than that, but not that I've found. I typically head East of town for smallies, not West. However, if you hit 'em right to the West it can be a blast.

Are you saying the Sheyenne flows east of Fargo or you just head into Minnesota to catch smallies? I have never heard of the Sheyenne flowing in Minnesota. I was only curious if you could catch smallies near Fargo on the Sheyenne.

The Sheyenne flows into the Red in Fargo / West Fargo... so no, I don't think he meant that. What I'm guessing he was implying is that he heads to Detroit Lakes, etc when he's looking for smallies...

The Sheyenne has always been a good river to fish. As any river you just have to put some time in. Eyes, smallies, northern and cats. A fathead minnow or a crawler and a split shot worked a lot for me. Or smelt if I was after northerns. #1 and #2 red and white mepps. #9 floating Raps. Almost as much fun as the mighty Miss. I chase whitetails out there with arrows also.
