Motor break-in on the Classic boats ???

blakjack23

Question

I got to thinking yesterday while watching day 3 of the Classic that I had on DVR.....Triton supplies all brand new boats and motors for the anglers and ESPN crew and I know after the Classic that these boats make their way to different dealers to sell. Do you think its bad that the engines were not broken in properly???? I mean, they get these brand new boats and just haul A$$ on them immediately. I guess some guys don't think you need any break-in time, but if I was going to spend 30 or 40K on a boat I think I would want one that was broken-in properly. Maybe I am wrong and these Pro XS motors don't need any break-in time?????

I was watching a show on espn about this very subject and they do break them in. They have people that go through all the break-in procedures before the pros even see them. A couple tanks of gas in each boat if I remember right. And many hours on the lake running back and forth. i will try and find it to get the exact specifications.

Wow, I wonder how you get that job? That'd be awesome!

Blakjack,

I had to do this jod, but with boats for the RCL. We would take them out and break the motors in, both main and kicker. We would also make sure all the electronics were set up right, the trolling motors worked, and everything else in the boat. It was a pretty fun job, could get kind of boring running in the lower RPM's.

I don't deal with the other brands, but the new Evinrude motors don't give any break-in instructions to their customers. The motors are prerun at the factory and the EMM takes care of the break-in once the customer takes delivery. It automatically leans the motor out as it seats rings and bearings. All the new motors out there are processor controlled now, so I would think they also control at least part of the break-in for the customer. This should help give you some warm fuzzies about the motor. The processor will also tell the dealer if the motor was abused in any way. Pretty nice thing to be able to show a customer.
