SOSpenders

gunflint

Question

I just recieved my first fishing equipment shipment for the new season. I ordered the self inflating SOSpenders. (Along with 2 shiney new Stradics, yes) anyway I'm a little concerned about the manual inflation tag. Seems to me it could easily get caught on something and inflate. blush.gif Is there any valid reason that I shouldn't tape it up out of the way? I know that I could rip the tape away in the water if I'm not knocked out. If I am knocked out it should self inflate. Right?

Unless they are a new style, they don't self inflate. If you're knocked out you're dead. I've been wearing one (the vest by stearns) in Alaska for years and pull the cord every 2 years to install a new CO2 cartridge. I know what you mean about being worried about yanking the thing- although I don't think it's likely. What I do it take out the pin or clip they use and tie a heavy loop of mono like 40-50 pound that you have to yank a little harder to inflate. I have had it catch on things before and this way it would really take a sharp pull but it's not too tough or anything.

I have been using the SOSpender for sometime and they have the auto inflate? I didn't think they made a strictly manual model.

What I did with the handle was put velco on them and velcro them up so they arent dangling looking to catch on something.

I just double checked the catalog. What I ordered was the World Class Style. According to the catalog the automatic version uses the Halkey-Roberts 6F trigger. (What ever the heck that is!) In the catalog it's called the automatic version and it sells for $20 more than the manual model. If someone can confirm that this is fully self inflating, please do so. Thanks

I've had a self-inflating SOSpender vest for 3 seasons now. I've never had a problem with the handle getting caught on anything. I wear mine all the time I'm in a boat whether it's under way or I'm drifing because I'm not a great swimmer. I'd make a great boat anchor, though smirk.gif. I love mine because it is light weight and is never in the way. The only time I don't like it is early and late season fishing because it doesn't provide any insulation like a full vest one does.
