Help with Organizing Crankbaits and Rapalas

TSCTSC

Question

I have 30-40 crank baits of all sizes. Those rapala type with 2 treble hooks each. Some are 1-2 inches and some are 6 inches or so. And I also have some spinners to boot. They are all in a mess in my tackle box. It looks ugly, the hooks always are fouled together, I cannot sea easily what I need when I am out on the water.

Can someone please tell me what tactic/tachnique they have to keep these crankbaits well organized, well displayed (so I can see what I have and use it) and easily retrieved? I have tried using treble hook covers, but IMHO, I think it is too much of a hassle everytime I use it and store it.

Any tips and help appreciated. Thanks. Pictures would be great too.

transparent plastic tackle trays is about all you can do if you dont want a mess. If you dont want them tangled, dont put too many per compartment. You dont have that many cranks, a box or 2 would take care of it. In the past I used to carry 300-400 in my boxes.. Its impossible not to get minor hook tangles with more than one lure per compartment.. just dont compact them too much if you dont want to be frustrated.

They do have hook guards that will lessen the amount of tangled hooks, but its not worth the hassle in my book. They end up in the boat, tackle bag, all over the place other than on the lures, and its one more thing to do on lure changes. I dont have the patience.

tackle box will hold maybe 40 at a time tangle proof? maybe ? castindad

The have models that will hold up to 192 cranks if you want the big box. Tangle proof. Each crank has it's own "holding cell".

Here ya go,

I have something very simalar to this and it works really nice. Funny thing is I can't find the one I bought. The one I have is kind of a soft side with a zipper on top. I got mine from Scheels in Sioux Falls, SD. Limitout has the right idea, sounds to me like we have pretty much the same tackle box, and just like him I need another one too tongue.gif

(please name the product without the link)

TSCTSC....

I use Planos CDS storage boxes. You can adjust the compartments to fit a variety of crankbaits. They have several different sizes of boxes around 5bucks apiece. As your lure selection grows you can label your boxes on top or on the end so you dont have to do alot of searching for your favorite bait.......

I use rubber bands on the hooks starting in the rear, under the belly and over the bill...I can fit 30-50 cranks in each plano 3600. The best is they do not bounce around inside the compartments and do not hook on themselves.

I had B & B boxes and I thought they were hard to use in the dark because you could not see the type or color of the crank. Plus they cost a ton of bucks for very little storage space.

This is the best crank box I've come across.

It's a Special Mate box by Trinity Industries. Do a search for Frank's Great Outdoors. They carry them in 5", 8" and 13" deep. I'll really like the plug boxes with dividers that really cut down and tangled hooks. I have two and believe me when I tell you I've tried lots of different options. Each holds up to 128 baits without crowding.

Falcon makes some great boxes for softsided tackle boxes. Their crank bait box is adjustable and the trays are tapered to allow the hooks to nest beneath the bait. It doesn't eliminate tangles but definitely helps. The best part is these boxes take up way less space than any other crank bait box I've seen. There medium cranbait box will hold 20 good size raps and it's only about 1.5" thick. They also have some great boxes for spinner baits. Check out their HSOforum and look at the "FTO 700" series boxes. I bought one of their soft sided bags stocked with 700 series boxes and it's the best bag I've used.

Im with Borche. I have 2 Special Mate Boxes. 1 for spoons and 1 for sticks/cranks and it works great. Cheffrey has a real nice clear box made by a local guy here in Duluth and its really nice as well. They are called Big Water Bait Boxes. If anyone needs the contact info e-mail me.
