make-shift ice cleats

Does anyone have ideas for quick and easy way to make something for walking on glare ice?. With this weather, it's going to be tough walking without them.

I hate to buy a set because I already have some, but left them elsewhere.

take a few very short hex head screws and screw them into the bottom of your boots... Be sure that the screws are much shorter than the sole of your boot so you dont get your feet wet or ruin your boots...

I actually went one step further.

I had an old pair of Sorels that I drilled small holes, and put small diameter bolts through the soles. I used small washers on both sides, and used Goop to plug the holes before I threaded the nuts on the underside of the sole.

It worked out fantastic.

I tried the screws into the sole, but they kept coming out.

If you have an old pair of boots to sacrifice, it worked very good for me.

I put hex heads in the bottom of my old boots and they work great. Only thing is do0nt wear them on your wifes new kitchen floor!

I've used hex head screws for the last three years and they work great. Get the stainless steel ones so they won't rust.

First Ice makes a CHEAP pair of cleats...about 2-3 bucks. The neoprene straps might break after a few times out. In that case, get some small diameter bungee cord and tie 'em in .

HT also makes a pair for $4.99. Best thing since sliced bread. Have had mine for a couple of years and still great. Not worth having a "make shift" pair when you can just buy a pair of these for such a small amount.

Hex sheet metal screws work great. Gotta love the clicking noise on the floor of bait shop and gas station!

Tip- Wear differnt shoes to the lake!

I took the advice of whoever said to use screws and they work really well, just seal the hole around the screw with some sort of glue.

I use the HT as well I keep an extra set in my truck for slippery non fishing days. Well worth the money for under $5, I recommend them to anybody.

Finns - Sorry for the late reply. I think Dsludge is correct. Hi Tech or Hi Tech Systems. Something like that. I've seen them in several bait shops as well as Fleet Farm.
