Question for all of you computer savy fellows(geeks)

Big Dave2

Question

I have recently aquired a computer that was better than the one I was using and I have one small problem. The hard drive has been reformatted and I need to download a driver for the sound card. The computer tells me that there is a sound card installed but that there is no driver installed. There seems to be no driver that works on the windows 98 disk or any disk that was given to me for this computer.

My question is, how do I go about finding out what sound card I have in this thing so I can possibly download one some where off the internet? Do I have to take it apart and physically look at the sound card? If so, where would it be located?

Thanks,

Dave

Control panel, sounds and audio devices, get the name of the Audio card Example:"yamaha ds1x native audio" google "search" the name of your card along with "+driver +98"

Or go to the manufactures site for the driver Example:"Yamaha"

If it a seperate card you can usually pop the case and take a look at it and it will give you some info, if it is on the motherboard that is a bit more difficult. If it is a PC from a major manufacturer, many of them have that info available on there HSOforum if you can find the serial number.

If windows can't find a driver it will load no information about the sound card and there is no universal sound card driver. So looking in multimedia and sounds will be fruitless.

On Windows 98 I believe you right click on "My Computer" and then select "Properties". In the system properties window select "Device Manager". Then scroll down and double click "Sound, Video and Game Controllers". Below should be a list of the installed drivers.

Hope this helped.

Thanks guys, looks like I will have to try taking the cover off and looking around. I have tried all the other things listed already with no results.

Metrojoe, When I click the "sound, video and game controllers" as you suggested all that is listed is "wave device for voice modem" but it says that it has a driver and is working fine.

Nope..that is the driver for your modem voice capability, it has nothing to do with Soundcard driver.

You will need to find out maker of it, or (if it's onboard) the maker of mainboard (or actual computer)
