Going to cancun first part of march. Any FMers ever fish there and if so was it worth it. Did you deep sea fish or fish in the lagoon, any luck and what kind of fish can I expect to catch. Also can you throw out some prices,or recommendations on charters. Is there any bass fishing. Thanks alot, gilby.

I went out of Cancun this summer when we stayed near Playa del Carmen. We were out near Cozumel trying for the big boys. It was VERY rough. I've spent a LOT of time in a boat, but this was a whole different experience. One guy was sick the whole 6 hours crazy.gif It was fun, but I don't think I would do it again. We ended up catching a bunch of blackfin tunas and a nice mahi mahi.

It would have been more enjoyable if it wasn't so rough. It was an hour ride out there and then we trolled for 4 hours and then an hour ride back.

A tip: They are really big on selling the mount, so if you show the slightest interest that you would mount the catch, they will "assign" you the pole when a big one is on (they know right away).

Gilb, not my ocean, but from what I read Cancun isn't a hotspot, except for one really good period, whih just happens to be right about when you'll be down there:) You might need to do some research, I can't help much on secifics because I haven't planned a trip there. It's a bigtime sailfish bite, and I mostly save my $$ for marlin. Anyway, Feb and march off Isle Mujeres, just off the coast by Cancun. Enter that in a searh engine and you should get some hits. It will be more expensive than some, being off the mainland like it is. Maybe boats from Cozemel go there as well, I'm not sure. I did just read that athough the hurricane hit them pretty hard, the fishing is petty much up and running now. Good luck!

My wife and I fished out of Captain Rick's in Peurto Adventurous when we were on our honeymoon in Playa Del Carmen last spring. We had a great time. We were there in April and landed 5 sailfish and 3 wahoos in a half day of fishing. We went the first 45 minutes without a strike, then we were getting fish every 10 minutes after that. Great run outfit with nice boats and great captains. It would probably be an hour and a half ride from Cancun, but well worth it if your day turns out anything like ours.

I posted on this last year. I go to Isla Mujeres every year. (way nicer than Cancun) really laid back.

The sail fishing off isla is world class. not out of reach to hook 20 fish a day!

I have gone with the boat KEEN M look them up at keenmsportfishing.com Anthony is the captain English speaking, He loves to fish!! Some do not.

He is moderatly priced and if you can find a couple other people to go along it cuts the cost a lot.

YOu need to pre book with hinm though.

The Lagoon in Cancun is a hidden secret.

Baby Tarpon, Snook, bonefish and a lot of other things.

I caught several sharks on skitter walks (really a rush, kind of like musky fishing but with bigger teeth)

I also bring a long rods and have caught lots of species wading or find a dock that they will let you cast from.

The guide for the Cancun lagon is Kim Lopez

unomassportfishing.com

Young guy but grew up fishing there. I actually traded out fishing gear for two days. he normally charges 250 a day it is worth it.

There is good fishing out of Cancun. Usually the best is said to be from about mid April thru mid May. I was down there last year toward the end of April. Went out with Cancun Scuba & fishing (down by the Grand Costa Real Hotel and bridge over the channel. They took us out 14-16 miles. Caught a 58 inch Maui Maui. and several other smaller fish. Another group caught a small shark. I would attach a pic of the Maui Maui but do not know how to here in the forum.
