2 Stroke to 4 Stroke - Is it worth it?

I have a 05 2 stroke 60hp motor that came with my tracker. I was wondering, is it worth it to upgrade the motor to a 75HP Optimax 4 stroke motor? With the trade in and what not, I will be looking at about 5100.00 difference installed

I wouldn't do it for $5100 no matter what type of 75 you'd end up with, that's a ton of money. You'd save some fuel, run quieter, and not catch one more fish than you would with the 60, unless you use your main motor for backtrolling, I suppose it would be quiter, but if you only use it only for running I'd hold to my point of it not improving your catch.

yes, it is pretty steep for an upgraded motor. I don;t plan on doing any backtrolling. The motor is just used to get me to and from where I need to go. Once I get there, Its all trolling motor along the weed edges and lilly pads for bass and muskies

So which is it... a optimax, or a four stroke? $5100 seems like a lot to me too... are they giving you any credit for your motor on trade? That price has got to be just about a new motor with no trade...

web a 2005 new75 yamaha 4 stroke costs in the ballpark of 6800 just so you can compare to the optimax so in that scenario you're not getting much for your 60 (a new 2 stroke 60 is worth about 4-4500). Either way I'd stick with the fact it doesn't do much for your fishing.

Why does it have to do anything for his fishing? I run a 70 Suzuki 4 stroke and would never go back to an older style 2 stroke. The Opti is not bad but it still has an odor. Maybe the Evinrude E-Tech will prove to be a winner in the long run. I like the fact I can run hard for three days on Vermillion and not have to put any gas in. I would say at $5100 they are giving him $2000 for trade.

I would say shop around a little then... 2000 for a 2005 Merc 60 HP on trade is a pretty lousy deal...

thanks for your responses guys! Perhaps I can sell the motor outright and just buy one that way instead of trading it in. It only has about 2-3 hours total on it. I use the trolling motor the most.

my point on doing something for the fishing is that since the goal is too catch fish getting to a spot minimally faster isn't going to help catching more fish. I understand the desire to go fast and have the most reliable motor possible (I have a 175 yam hpdi myself). To pay $5100 one year after purchasing the motor seems like a waste to me, obviously the best would have been to put on a similar motor to your 70 Suzuki. I used to have a 17' smokercraft with a 90 2 stroke, now with an 18' prov with a 175 my livewell hasn't got any more or less fish put in it than before, or not enough to justify it if the smokercraft hadn't just been worn out and pretty much fully utilized.

Everyone has good points to their advise. I think if it were me I would stick with the 2 stroke. The biggest deciding factor for that choice is that you do not troll much with the motor. If you trolled I would say it would be more worth looking into. You still have a fine motor right now and for just getting to and from a fishing spot personally I don't think the hit you'll take would be worth it. Just my .02

I agree with Gus... a four stroke is nice.. but since you've had the boat for a little while now and have only put on 1-2 hours it probably isn't worth the extra money to upgrade... at least not at this point...

How did the costs break down (trade-in, etc)? Still seems like they're giving you a raw deal...

Well, I spoke with the guy I bought the boat from and informed him of my intentions. He indicated that the motor I wanted, 4 stroke, 75hp power tilt and trim will be about 8k. With my trade in, it total cost to me would be about 5K so thats how it got broken down

$5100 is a lot of gas money, bait, electronics upgrades, new trolling motors, custom boat cover, downriggers, new rods, many many trips to LOW and URL etc etc. As others have said, with 2 hours on the motor, I wouldn't even think about upgrading the motor, but accessories on the other hand are probably a better option.

A bigger motor might get you to your destination a few minutes faster and with a little less noise, but you're probably not going to be able to fish that much larger of a body of water with your rig. I'd say go for it if you planned on fishing larger bodies of water like Mille Lacs and are underpowered with your current set-up, otherwise, deck your boat out, take a bunch of fishing trips with the family and enjoy.

Web, that's a lot of money for a 4 stroke. I would SERUOUSLY shop around, now it's the time, wait 1 month and will be too late.

I wouldn't give in until you get approx $ 2500 difference for upgrade, anything else you are giving your motor away.

At this pont sell it on hsolist for what it's worth it, gosh $ 3000 for s 05 60hp is a heck of a deal.

Optimax are 2 strokes, if you want a 4 stroke be sure of what you get, look at motor it will say CLEARLY on hood Four Stroke

I forgot to mention the difference of top speed between 60hp and 75hp is just few miles.

If you do 40mph now you will reach probably 44mph with a 75, I don't feel it's worth the money.
