So woodduck26... The color accuracy of a duck's feet is the most important factor you consider when choosing a taxidermist??

I can deal with the feet. Its just paint. It can be fixed.

On the other hand, finding a taxidermist who can make a duck look as realistic as possible can be tough. Lots of ducks look stiff and unnatural.

I just posted my photos so others can enjoy them and possibly get some ideas from them, not for someone to criticize my taxidermist, who just happens to be a close relative.

Can we see your photos now??

Hanson, don't let him get to ya. Your buffle mount is very nice. Thats not an easy position to do and it looks good. I've noticed that the feet on the buffle drake is gray and pinkish where the the hens are more pink. Your mount is fine.

Well, actually all aspects of the mount are important, and acuracy is VERY important, as is quality, or we mount our own birds! Theres a reason we pay $200+ for a good mount, you're paying for a professional job! You are right it's only paint, and it can be fixed, but the "artist" should do his/her homework on every bird, fish animal they mount to insure a PAYING CUSTOMER they are getting a true to life mount.....or am I wrong?

and since you asked.......

Heres is my Mallard, from about 7 years ago, I think the Taxidermist did a poor job the feet are ver wrinkled, the wings are un even, and the bill shoulda been painted better.......I wont go back to him.

Heres my Bufflehead, from a different Taxidermist, I think he did a great job, my Wigeon will be heading his way!

I have shot my fair share of Buffleheads and I don't ever remember seeing feet that color. Gray and pink, but never a pastel pink like that confused.gif besides, with a head like that who in the world is looking at the feet.

Hanson ask Jack about this. I am sure he will go toe to toe with anyone in a contest and come out on top with out a doubt.

In those links there is only one picture that you can clearly see a foot the other ones are just pretty duck pics. but as you can see from all the pictures and mounts the color of the feet varys a lot. I've seen this with the bird I have shoot also, and we shot quite a few buffles. The feet of one can be very pink and the next drake they are almost gray.

Hanson, That buffle looks great I love the way he's "coming out of the wall."

woodduck26-

#1- I love your Bufflehead mount. That is sweet!

#2- I don't know what color the feet are supposed to be. I spent a few minutes searching the web, specifically taxidermy sites with reference photos and it sure looks like a bufflehead's feet are supposed to be a light pink color. Maybe we are both right. Mallards feet change color. Perhaps there is variation in the Bufflehead's feet as well. I'm going to have to go dig out the photos from when we shot that bird but I don't think the feet are visible.

I think this thread is turning into another learning experience. Take good photos of your bird or fish before bringing them to the taxidermist. I can see a number of reasons for this. #1 would be to make sure you are getting the same bird or mount back. #2 would be to give the photos to your taxidermist for reference. Maybe there is some characteristic that your bird/fish or whatever has that you want to make sure the mount has as well.

Thanks for posting the photos.

I'll try to remember to ask Jack the next time I see him. Hopefully I'll be bringing him in some Upper Red crappies after this weekend if the cold front doesn't totally shut them down.

Sorry woodduck, but I don't see that pastel color on any of the pics. Some are bright pink, some faded pink to a slight grey.
