Sturgeon Excursion Teaser - Ice Out

Rick

Recommended Posts

Deitz, Yeah, I do the camera proud don't I? Just wish there was some footage of all the pout I was catching. Anyone can catch those big mouth sturgeon, but it takes talent to set a hook that big in the relatively small mouth of a pout.

Leech,

I'll be ready to hit the water with you whenever you can make it.

As for the pike. Rick's measured just shy of 43 inches, and if memory serves, all of us caught at least one over 37 that day. As Fisky mentioned, there are other areas to find those toothy s.o.b's. in the Spring, so you don't have to drive all the way to Warroad if you're staying in the Baudette area.

Did you measure that fish Jon? Better add or subtract 4.5 inches eh! LOL!

In the case of above mentioned Pike subtract. In the case of my walleye 2 weeks ago Saturday add! Is 4.5 inches a standard deviation, or 'yardstick', for any particular reason Jon! Rather ironic I'd say!!!

Some peoples memories and measuring skills are not to be trusted anymore. wink.gif

For those who are wondering, Fisky brought a walleye over to my fishouse for me to measure for him a couple weeks ago. He did not hang around to watch the measuring take place, and said it was about 26 inches. When he hollered over from his shack for the actual measurement, I told him 22 inches.....I couldn't bring myself to tell him his 26" guess was only a half inch off, and that he guessed too short. So here it is Fisky, my public announcement that your fish was indeed 26 1/2".

The measurement on the pike in question was accurate to plus or minus a half inch, and I just witnessed the measuring, I didn't perform it.

Yo John...I tried to make those pout look like a Sturgeon..with not much luck. I am really looking forward to this trip. It was by far the best I have been on in nearly 30 shows we have done. And to be honest I had as much fun taking Rick and Deitzs money playing poker back at the cabin.

Also be sure to look for a 30 inch Marriah (as they are called up north der on da Red of the North) We know them as Ling Cod, Eelpout, Lawyers, bourbout.

I should have the Giant Greenbacks of the Red(walleyes) HotSpotOutdoors show Part 2 done in the next few days. Some real hogs coming thru the Ice again! To bad I just get to edit this one.

I hope you all enjoy the shows as much as I do making them! grin.gif

Holy Cow Darin, you hit double digits in posts!!!!! Now we have something extra to celebrate in April. If we end up bunking with Wiskers again, I call a room he's not in right now. I had to throw away a couple hundred dollars worth of clothing, because I couldn't get the odor out. Happy Holidays......

Hey Deitz, good info. Thought I'd hop it back to the top. Talking to my wife's great uncle, who was there in the 20's 30's until the mid 40's. He was employed by the paper mills - lumber industry. They used to spear the sturgeon with the log rollers and let em float off down the river. He said in the early days there were huge sturgeon. in the later years there were few and they weren't the size of the first. Too bad they weren't understood as they are today. They sure are fun to catch.

Dennis, you beat me by a few minutes. I was going to say that his momma should whup his butt.

Dennis, if you need any help with cats on ice, give me a call. I have a long weekend before that event. And I know how to cook for crowds. I raised four LARGE sons. grin.gif

Generally speaking, it seems to be human nature to miss things once thier gone. Starting to hunt and fish in the 60's and '70's, seldom seeing a 5 lb walleye (and if I did it was on a stringer), having closed pheasant seasons and a one drake mallard limit...I'm really happy to be alive today to enjoy the wildlife and the fishing we have today.

It's amazing!

Brian-

You have to stop threatening to use their prized fish as cutbait.

We all know the 5-6 pounders cut up better than the small ones.
grin.gif

I dont think many of the fish Brian caught last year would of had a problem taking a live 5 lb Bass for bait.. why cut them up and get that stinky bass slime on your hands when you dont have to? grin.gif

Spring is almost here guys, I cant wait.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
