Vented Heater Suggestions for a Small Permanant House

I am getting ready to build my second fishouse. This time I am going for a smaller, two man model that will be 5'x6'. I am planning on having a chimney stack to accommodate a small furnace. Does anyone have any experience with or know where I can find a small LP furnace? In my "big" 7' x 12' fishouse, I have a nice 12,00- BTU model that I got at fish house supply. That might be overkill for my small space.

Also, has anyone ever used a small woordburning stove? It sounds quaint and I have access to plenty of firewood. but it seems like a small woodburner would be more trouble than it is worth to get a fire started, keep it going and clean it out. Also... does it make your house smell smoky?

Thanks

I have a little stove made by uncle josh that is very similar to the nu-way stoves that we used to use in the old mankato portables before the days of good sunflower heaters. They are a little single burner gas job that is about 7"x7"x12" tall with a burner that looks alot like the old gas stove burners. I'm not sure where to find them now maybe do a web search for uncle josh stove or nu-way heater. They would be perfect for what you are doing and they are pretty cheap.

I tried the wood thing once and won't do it again. It seemed like it was either hot enough to cook a turkey or cold enough to see your breath. I couldn't get control of the heat with the wood and it stunk up the house.

I have a 5x7 permanant house that I have insulated and use a Lazer Heater I got at Mills. It is plenty hot and most times I run it on low. The nice thing is you can set a pan on it to cook hotdogs or add moister. I have never tried it but I would like to sleep out in it but I am not sure if it is safe enough. I have it piped straight up plus I have the tank outside. Anyone have a clue if these are safe to sleep in? I never get lite headed when fishing so I am thinking it will be ok.

Those type stoves aren't sealed, drawing intake air in from on open bottom. So its possible to get a get exhaust gases backing up into your shack. Having said that I wouldn't dare sleep in any shack without a CO detector and that goes for all the ventless models as well.

I have a small wood stove in my 6x8 fish house. I like it, its not as handy as just turning on a gas stove, you have to stoke it perodically, but when the fishing is slow, thats ok. Plus you can't just go fill the tank, you have to stock up on small wood, I have two buckets, one for starter wood and one for chunks. Plus I use the fire starters. First thing on the ice, start the stove, drill holes, by the time I get the house set down, I'm getting heat. It has a flat top, so I can take a fry pan or a regular pan and warm up supper. You have to be careful not to over heat, but to me thats not a problem, I just open a window or the door. If you're getting smoke in the house its because of a bad stove pipe or you've filled the stove too full and gettng a 'poof' back at you. I like the wood stove, but its not for everyone.

Good point ST. I am so scared off the exhaust gas I have battery operated detector fastened to sled in my portable. (I tend to doze off from time to time wink.gif)
