Awesome hunt with Kid...

Recommended Posts

Last weekend was one of the best hunts I have ever had! I was with my daughter (13 yrs) in a deer blind. Saw a bald eagle, listened to coyotes sing, ate pizza (I had a lienie or 2, after the hunt) and counted better than 30 deer before I took my shot!! And it was thanks to my daughter's eye, we have venison.. And it was a trophy in my eye!!! We took a 3x2 buck under the most perfect conditions, perfect shot, perfect kill, perfect company, perfect hunt!!!! Even had an anatomy lesson with interest!!!

She says she is ready to take her 1st deer!! Even looked at rifles today!!!! grin.gif

Boar & Gizzert, it don't get no better!!! Advice to rest of ya'll.. Take a kid hunting.... (Oh yeah, snickers bars, mt dew (huntin chow ya know...) and a tent blind go a long way..

Awesome!!!

Glad to see you here on the FM board Rod, didn't know you were here. Sounds likes Sara and dad had a great time. Went to ND over thanksgiving to try out my new .17 Rem on some pigeons. Fantastic to shoot and deadly accurate. Can't wait to try it on some praire dogs, when is the trip? Might be back in ND in a few days to help with bologna making. Rooster just bought a new 100# stuffer and a new 100# grinder-mixer!

I had one of the most enjoyable deer rifle seasons ever due to both my 12 year old daughter and son getting their first deer. Definitely changes dad's focus to getting them an opportunity versus really wanting to shoot something myself. Don't get me wrong, I still shot a big doe and a nice 8 pointer, but my daughter missed the doe first before I took her and she also shot at the doe that was with the buck so I wasn't stealing her chances.

You are definitely right about the treats! Mine were not planning on doing the trick or treating thing this year due to their age when I casually mentioned that they were responsible for bringing whatever "treats" they wanted. They each filled a gallon zip-lock with treats fro each weekend. The thought of eating all of that candy that early in the morning turns my stomach, but that candy definitely keeps them in the game all day long.

I also took one of the neighbor boys to Firearms Safety class last year and he managed to get out with his grandpa this year and although they didn't get anything I feel like I helped him forward since his parents don't hunt.

Opening weekend, my buddies 11 year old joined myself and my daughter in the stand and we had many a good discussion and story-telling. Nothing like having a captive audience! Second weekend, my son hunted with myself and my daughter and some of the same stories were told.

I can't imagine not sharing my deer stand going forward for years to come.

Hey Viggy Stardust, er Rod, I mean Nodak7MM!

Nice going. You must be a proud pappa for sure. I know what you mean about getting the kids interested.

I shot a nubbin last weekend with my smokepole, and my 4 year old daughter helped with the butcher job. After about 5 minutes, she was pointing out tallow and silver skin that needed trimming.

Great story! I also brought a new hunter into the woods this year, my cousin. Although she isn't a kid, she's 24, she decided that she wanted to try hunting but did not have anyone to take her so she had asked if I could show her where to go. I told her that she could go with me and I would help her out. She went through the safety class and was very excited. I called her a couple days before the season and she was already so excited you could here it in her voice. Opening morning we went out to the field, got to the brush where we were going to sit and got comfortable. About an hour later a couple does came running towards us. They had stopped about 95 yds away and I told her that this was a clean shot and to shoulder the gun. She took her first shot at a deer! She missed, but the adreniline rush and the excitement she had was incredible. We did a couple drives later that day and I had gotten a doe, she wanted to field dress it, so I walked her through it and she did a great job. The following morning in a new blind I was watching one direction and she was watching another. She started to get "twitchy" and saying "Buck,Buck,Buck" she shot And missed again, I followed up and got him. She had the hunt of lifetime and is hooked for good! I also found a renewed excitement in going to the field!!

Great post Nodak7mm

I was fortunate to have a simalar fall with both my kids. I'm a single parent and I have to tell ya. Their hunting experince this fall has made me feel like I was a teen ager all over again. My kids filled are freezer this fall. Both kids (son 14 this year and daughter 13) took the gun safety last year, did some small game both here in Colorado and back home in Minnesota. This year they where both accepted into a Dept.of Wildlife youth hunt and they both got their elk. Both nice big cows. It was the most awsome thing to see them grow up (mature, gain cofidence, etc.) right before my eyes. The hunt was really great, we are pretty close but we got even closer.

rock on guys.....Mikinaak cool.gif
