shot a pheasant over my duck decoys..

Recommended Posts

I was sitting out duck hunting yesterday and had a rooster fly over my decoys, safe to say he got dropped. I wonder what my dog thought about bringining in a rooster while she was duck hunting!! I like the taste of pheasant over duck anyhow...

Cool! But I need more details. Did you use a hail call, comeback call or the feeding chuckle to bring him in? Did you have a spinner pheasant decoy in your set? What about a flag? Did you flag him in? Was he cupped with his feet down when you shot or was he circling for another look before coming in? Enquiring minds want to know.

Very cool, but I gotta ask since we had a discussion about this on Saturday morning while duck hunting. We kept hearing pheasants nearby and we assumed if we saw one we couldn't shoot it since we weren't wearing blaze orange. But on the other hand, we weren't hunting pheasants, we were hunting ducks, so maybe it would be legal. What is a hunter to do in this situation?

I believe what it says in the regs if you are using steel shot you dont need to have blaze orange on when your grouse hunting or i should say when you are duck hunting , but walking from one pond to another and you see a grouse you can shoot it. i believe this would apply to shooting a pheasant while you are duck hunting. If im wrong would someone clarify this. Anyhow congrats on the bonus bird, not too many pheasants have been shot over a spread

The only special regulation I think you would have to follow would be to adhere to the 9:00 AM pheasant opening time and make sure you have the pheasant stamp. If that big rooster flies over before 9 AM, you would need to let it fly.

I have done combos where we will pheasant hunt a WPA as we work our way to a slough to jump ducks.

dont have to worry about the time thing, it was about 10 to 4 in the afternoon have the stamp too, all is covered. I couldnt believe it, i heard them back there in the reeds and then one flys across right over the spread in front of me trying to get to the other side of the slough, it was unreal...i was telling myself i better not miss this sucker! He didnt know what was coming too him, i popped up out of the blind and splash down! Pretty cool stuff!

Gamak... appears to be correct. If you are hunting with nontoxic shot you do not need to wear blaze orange.

Rules on page 27 distinctly state "or".

Bet if you are stopped on a Federal WPA hunting pheasants with steel shot and no blaze orange - many COs would challange you by trying to write a ticket.

Still a good idea to wear some orange when grouse or pheasant hunting.

Kodiak, this happens quite a few times while we are hunting in ND. 1st time it happened it was the talk of the day until the next day when 3 other guys did the same thing.

My lab was a little hesitant on retreiving a pheasant from the water and had to get a good sniff of it first before she woud grab it. After that I think I've got about a dozen sitting on a pot hole and having a rooster fly over. Once even had some Huns fly within range but didn't get any, shooting steel 2's didn't help.

I was not certain of the rules, I was walking down a trail to a duck spot with my camo and 3 inch steel, and a grouse jumped out, I brought the gun up, but did not fire thinking I had no orange on. then after much thought I decided to shoot, but had to wait till it took off and was out aways, since I did not want to blow it away with 3 inch mags, it got up flew a ways, and I missed.
