Boat Colors

gunflint

Question

It's early in my boat refurbishing project but I need to pick out carpet colors fairly soon. In order to do that I have to decide on the boat color itself.

This boat is used for walleye fishing only. I plan on a darker color carpet so that crawler dirt doesn't show so easily. The main question I have has to to with exterior color.

The boat has non-painted aluminum sides. The cheapest, easiest, and fastest route is to clean it polish it and call it done. My concern is, would a mirror like shine relect too much light and spook the fish? Is there any evidence that a less light reflecting color like black, or dark blue spooks less fish? Thanks. Maybe I should start watching those decorating shows that my wife is constantly watching tongue.gif

I'd go with some shade of gray carpet. When worm dirt dries it turns gray. I suppose in a real clear water lake the reflection might we a problem. If it's that clear you'd probably be casting to them anyway though.

gunflint... I never had any problems catching fish from a basic aluminum boat... all species, day or night.

The only major drawback to aluminum without paint is it gets HOT in the sunlight of summer, especially if the boat is beached on shore(boat sitting in water cools it off considerably).

If you do paint the boat, I would stick to a lighter color like tan. If you get too dark it will absorb the heat also. As for carpet... dark carpet at night can be a pain to see dark things.. like a leech, dark to jighead, etc. Just about any *earth tone* color for carpet will not show every little speck of dirt, and the little bit lighter colored carpet will also light up a little better under light to see things in the interior of the boat.. you usually dont have to break out a metal detector to find that split shot you just dropped.
