warm boots

Recommended Posts

How much thinsulate is too much? I want to get a good warm pair of boots for deer hunting and also ice fishing. 1000-1200g ok or more? The boots I currently use for hunting only have 400g. They don't quite get the job done heat-wise when sitting those late Nov. mornings or ice fishing. What do some of you guys use.

I think circulation is the key. I have 3 pairs 600, 800 & 1000 Rockys.. The 800 & 1000 are both plenty warm for me during the hunting and ice fishing season. When deer hunting I actually wear tennis shoes while driving the woods. It sounds funny but I have been doing that for 15+ years. Where on the other hand, my dad can't even phantom to wear anything less than 1200g. I think it really depends on the person to be honest.

My feet get cold if they are sitting on the ice with 1000 gram thinsulate boots. They are fine for a house with a floor, and for deer hunting if its not crazy cold.

If there is any question, I break out the Ice Kings... you wont get a complaint out of me if my feet are even a hair too warm.. I dont like cold feet.

That's the exact same way as me That Guy. If there's any question...the ice kings go on...and never get cold feet. They are awesome. Little bulky for bow hunting...but I wear them if it's really cold. Otherwise I use my Rocky 1000 gram thinsulate for bow hunting. But if it's cold and I'm sitting all day...the ice kings go on...why have cold feet if you got the ice kings waiting to be used.

Most of your leather/nylon boots with 1000g won't keep your feet warm sitting in cold weather hunting or sitting on the ice. However, if you go to the rubber boots - Rocky, LaCrosse, etc. with 1000g, they do much better. You trade warmth for weight, its that simple.

I like my Ice Kings for ice fishing, but they are too heavy for hunting unless you pretty much plan to stay in one spot. One other comment. Wear wool socks so that the mositure gets wicked away from your skin. Cotton may be great for some things, but it will definitely hold the moisture and that will make your feet feel cold!
