uh.... Centerfire? Actually I don't know that is why I'm asking. There is a few at Gander that I was looking at. One is 159.00, 189.00 and 239.00

The 239.00 comes with a scope and medium weight barrel, the 189.00 is with no scope, medium barrel, and 159.00 is with a lighter scope. All I know is that its a Bolt action rifle with a cartridge capacity of 10??

there ia a .17HRM and a .17Mach2 and a .17 Rem centerfire.

I have all but the Mach2. What one are you interested in?

Hi Webby,

These sound like the .17 caliber rimfires, given the price ranges.

They have become very popular in the last three years. We have several at our Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation banquet every year.

As mentioned before, there is the .17 HRM and the .17 Mach 2. I like the Savage line myself.

Either one would make a great small varmit rifle.

Why the dislike of bolts?

the .17 (caliber in inches)Hornaday Magnum Rimfire (HMR) is a .22magnum rimfire casing necked down to .17". the Mach2 is a plain .22long rifle necked down to .17". The .17 Remington (centerfire)is a big boy when compared to the first 2 (the rimfires). the 17 Rem is very fast and flat but wind will cause alot of drift at long ranges. people generally hunt p-dogs and stuff with them. the rimfires are a great gun for squirrels and I have killed many p-dogs with mine where you can get close. If you are looking for a small game gun, the rimfires are the best, as the centerfire round is pretty hot for something you might want to eat. I have a Savage bolt action 17HMR and it shoots really nice. That is probably the funnest gun I own and it certainly is the most fun for the $$$.

I agree, the 17HMr is a little light for fox and coyotes.

If you want a decent gopher, crow,or woodchuck sized critter's gun, the 17HMR should do fine. One nice auto loader out there is by Remington. runs off detachable clips.

Web,

If you looking for a pure varmint (coyote/fox) gun. I'd say go with a .223 or 22-250. Tons of factory rounds to choose from, if you don't hand load. Heavier bullets won't be affected by wind as much. I personally like the heavier bullets so I went with a .243Win. I hand load them with 60gr-75gr and get 3750fps.

As for Bolt or Auto Loader??

That's personal opinion. Most varmint hunters are bolt action guys. Out of the box they seem more accurate then an autoloader. Savage, Remi, Win, have all been great rifle's to me. Best value might be the Savage line of rifles. If you can spend the extra $$$$ get a rifle with Stainless steel barrel. Easier to keep from rust during harsh hunting conditions.

Hope this helps, tell us what ya decide.

I just purchased the savage mark II .17M2 a few weeks ago. It shoots incredible groups! Sight that baby at 75 yards and you will still be hitting the bullseye from 25 yards out to 150 yards. Cheap ammo and a great plinker. I think this gun will eventually replace the .22 as the all-around plinker.

For the gun, 3x9x40 scope, sling and 2 boxes of shells at Gander I paid around $230.

Well, basically I want to do squirrel, crow, varmit, rabbit hunting so a .17 thats good for all of those should be fine.. I'm still looking around to see if I can find a good .17. I'll keep you guys updated.. Thanks for all the responses!!

When I saw 17mm. I had to look. That would be .669 cal.

I like T/C auto loader in .17M2. From what I have read it is a shooter.

The .17M2 is a good 100yd gun. Unless your looking to shoot further then that, I would go with it.

I have to admit that I'd like to see a .669 take out a squirrel.

Actually it would be a new way to not ruin any meat. Take out the tree instead and the squirrel will fall out and hit it's head grin.gif

I have a Savage bolt action 17. I have one made by Ruger. I paid $189 for the savage with scope and $329 for the Riuger. Shot for shot, the Savage is just as good as the Ruger. I have called and shot 5 Coyotes with the 17, but they were all head shots at 80 to 100 yards. None of them got awayt. They are really fun to shoot the Rabbits and the Gophers with to. I t is in my truck all the time now. 22 is setting in the closet now. CAJ
