Were thinking of trying the honey burn thing this year since our time is short for baiting, couple ?s for anyone. 1. how much honey are we talking? just a jar or what? 2. How about wind, alot or a little? and do you want to be downwind or up wind of the burn, thanks for any advice. tried the baiting thing a couple years ago with no success but a couple Fishers/chipmonks checking the bait

I used to do a honey burn but switched to cooking a big jar of strawberry preserves. Mix with a box of strawberry jello diluted with a little water. Cook this over a sterno heater. Strawberries are a more natural food for the bears and they love it!

Brought in several bears with this technique.

I made a honey burner that I used bacon grease instead of honey. Man did that smoke up a storm. Smelled really good too. Then the stuff caught on fire and the grease was an inferno of flames. I tried to put it out and ended up with flaming grease on my hand. A trip to the E.R. and a twelve pack made it all better. Now I have a nasty looking scar on my hand to remind me of stupid things I do.

But chicks dig scars right?

Hey pete it dont take much grease or honey or any thing else to put out the scent i just suggest that you give youre stand time a hour or so extra when heating up to get the scent out there an circulate in the area. I never used more than half a pint of grease or honey. When I took my bear on a burn my scent an the grease were blown towards the bear when he came in the bacon was to much for him to hold out i guess. Later boar

Note to self, "If bacon grease bursts into flames, don't attempt to put it out with my HAND". I wonder if Smokey the Bear was watching from a distance? Sorry Dan, I just couldn't resist. That must have hurt like the dickens!

I really like the Strawberry Preserves Burn idea. That could be really cheap, safe, easy, and effective! Possibly multiple burns at once? Bacon grease and strawberry jam? Hhhmmmm....Excuse me, I gotta go get something to eat.....

Some advice I got from an old-timer... Dig a deep hole in the woods and start a big fire in it. When it has burned down to just ashes, pour a pint of honey on it and hide. The bear will smell it and investigate. When he's standing on the edge, looking in, sneak up behind him and kick him in the ash hole.. Sorry guys, I had to put that one in here.

I take a med size coffee can and half way through 4 punch holes aacross from each other and feed wire through it. I also will cut out a section on the bottom to put a tea cup candle in and lite it. On top of the wire I put a soup can and pour about a 1/5 of it with honey. Light the candle and get in your stand and wait. It will start to heat up and if it gets too hot it will smoke like a choo choo train. It will catch on fire shortly after that so I like to have some extra water with to put it out. It will bring a nocturnal bear in early.

I use sterno but dont know if they come in different sizes, the one I use are about twice the thickness as a can of tuna an equal in diameter. They last about two hrs. More than enough to scent up the area. Ive tried tea candles but they burn out to fast for me. I like to heat up quick an get kitchen cookin fast. later boar
