Predator control

So what do you guys do if anything for predator control?

I don't go out of my way looking for them to kill but I will without one thought put a arrow through one that walks by my stand during bow season.

Last year two yotes and 3 coons got to meet one of my arrows first hand and one fox got lucky that I missed.

bring extra arrows .

Or get a coon dog and a good flashlight .

Go out on an earlier date and set traps where the animals are walking around and on their trails. That's about all I can give ya'

i think predator control is under valued. it is a coincidence that before it was unfashionable to wear fur we had more birds? I tried trapping 2 years ago for the first time and no matter where I set a trap I would get 4 or 5 cats before I got an actual game animal. When people aren't trapping coons or fox, they aren't getting these wold cats either. There has to be millions of them in the state. By the way, my name "catman" is for the fish, I don't enjoy land cats at all.

Actually, we shot 5 or 6 more after the picture was taken We had some serious fun that winter! I think we ended up with 4 racoon and 7 or 8 bonus fox along with the coyotes. I moved to South Dakota that spring, so I have not been able to make it back home to hunt with the boys as often as I want anymore. But they are still at it! They still shoot 30-40 every year even with out much snow. Notice that handsome fella (4th from the right)

I have a live trap set by my birdfeeder all spring and summer. So far I'm up to seven coon and two cats. I figure that the more coons I catch early in the spring the less nests thats will be disturbed. I had coons climbing my martin house pole and pulling out nests and eggs. Caught two of them in traps below the pole. They're thick around central MN. I've gotten to the point where not only do I put predator guards on my wood duck houses, I put them on my bluebird houses.

That is an awesome sight! Nothing better than a pile of dead 'yotes. Rost there are still plenty of them buggers to shoot in So. Dak.!!! What was the time frame to pile up those dogs... was it only a 1 day shoot?

That's a great pic. Was it a full moon night? My buddy uses a black rooster too lure them in on full moon nights but usually he only gets a couple. How about an FM yote shoot? Does anybody make hats?

It took us about 2 months to get them. We shot our first yote in late December and ended early March. Hunted all weekend, every weekend (just ask our wives, they still havn't forgivin us). I remember one morning we had 6 dead by noon! The snow helped us a lot that year.

I do quite a bit of yote hunting here in SD, but it is hard to get the numbers without a team. Plus, we only know a fraction of the land owners here compared to back home. I know of a group from just west of here that shot 125 last year!!!

WOW thats a lot of dogs holy *^%& sorry about that word but thats a lot of yote. GREAT JOB. I will this year proably get a few yote and coons. Last year when I was yote hunting I saw a coon. I was about 10 yards away. and I had 31/2" T shot but I didnt shoot it I think I would of blown it apart so I didnt shoot the coon. Also I could not of used the pelt.

Rost. I have a good SoDak coyote story for you. My older brother was travelling in western SD and the only radio station he could get was a local one that was interviewing a sheep rancher about predator control. He was talking about different ways to control coyotes and they were taking callers' questions. The station must not have had a delay to screen the conversation. Some woman called in and and said," Why do you have to kill the coyotes? Couldn't you just catch the males and neuter them and let them go?" Using a naughty word for the reproductive process, the rancher replied, " Lady, the coyotes don't want to (bleep) my sheep, they want to kill them!"
