Warm weather bait

Having lots of trouble keeping my leachs live and kicking,I have been storing them in a large plastic tube that allows water to pass through at the end of my dock. How can I keep them alive in this heat and the warmer weather?

All i can think of, is to refrigerate them, and change the water every few days, or to weight them down, so the don't float on top of the water.

Make sure they are shaded (container cover with many holes) and they are where there is some water flow.

Fridge!!! I still have leeches from the second weekend in May! I keep them in my garage fridge in a cooler. I change the water twice a week. The cold kills my willow cats, but the leeches seem to love it. I have lost maybe a dozen leeches total out of 5 pounds, and some of those were already put on a hook and thrown back into the bucket. One thing I have found is keep your baits seperated. Minnows and leeches don't seem to do too well together.

Had a customer who said he kept his in a leech tamer and floated it the tank of his toilet....nice cold water, and changed water when flushed!....worked great, he said...till his wife found out!

Now that's one I will have to try.Never worry about forgetting to change the water,or out of town and ask your 5yr old boy to change it(big mistake).

The toilet...what a great idea! I will have to try that one as well. I will be thinking about that one all day

leeches in the toilet... definitely one for the notebook. hahaha.

Miltona, you must be an old service man. Like you, the toilet tank is a great place to cool down a couple of beers and we did this in the service. I imagine it would work well for leeches.

Does the tube float? Put some rocks in it, get it to sink. Its colder at the bottom. Works good with minnows also.

I kept my leeches on ice in my boat cooler all weekend. Leeches were lively as ever all weekend. Keep them cold.

For those of us who have chlorinated water it would be best to keep it out of the toilet. Clorine kills the leeches real quick. Those who have well water now have a reason for the second bathroom.
