I have been bass fishing a lot this summer and have caught a half dozen or so largemouth over the 20 inch mark. I was wondering what size everyone thinks is a trophy size fish in minnesota?

ZOKU,

I broke the 5 pound mark 2 years ago. WOW what a feeling. Keep at it and you'll get that pig.

(she weighed in at 6.5 pounds.) Next year it's off to Texas's Lake Fork, for some real pigs. yee haa.

It depends what you consider a trophy, something to put on the wall, or something to take a picture of. Certain lakes are known for producing bigger bass, obviously. If your fishing a lake with a slot like chisago area then I would say 22 inches, same with known big bass lakes like tonka and .... well, I'll just keep those secret wink.gif. As for just your average lake 20" 5# is a trophy. The poster also mentioned thay have been fishing alot, and if he is fishing the same or a few lakes, he has probably found some good spots and that increases the chances that he runs into 20" fish.

For me to put something on the wall regardless of what lake I catch it out of it will have to be at least 22" 7#, but to say that is the minimum size to be considered a trophy I don't believe. Besides, its nice to be able to say "I released a trophy fish today."

SCUMFROG:

Congrats on the 6.5-pounder! smile.gif Man, what an awesome feeling that must've been!!

With any luck, hopefully, I'll get a boat next year. It's tough to have too many personal goals without one. frown.gif But it'll only be a matter of time before I get one of those hawgs on my line!!

Yes it was. I didn't know how big it was because of all the weeds it was tangeled in. But when I put my hand in, yes I said "in" it's mouth my heart sank. I called my buddy who didn't want to come fishing that day, right away and rubbed it in. grin.gif

A 20" 5 lber is a dang nice bass in MN, but no trophy. 22" is more like it, although it is only a 2" length difference, that bass will probaby weigh up to 40% more than a 5 lber. cool.gif

Duffman- A 20 in 5 lb Bass is a trophy to me, I don't get out bass fishing all that much, but when I do it is really a blast, my biggest so far is just a touch under 18 in, and 4 pound 1 ounce, to me a 20 incher would be a trophy, not big enough to mount, but a trophy none the less.

RiverRat....

I was thinking more in terms of a wall mounter. A trophy is always up to the individual, it doesn't have to be a large fish, just one that provides great memories. My first five pounder was a great memory, and I didn't equal or surpass it for about ten years. But in the last couple of years I've been lucky enough to get about 9 20" or larger bass, so maybe I've upped the trophy ante a little in my mind. As was said before, the key is to fish bodies of water that hold more numbers of bigger bass, it just increases your odds of getting into one.

I told a buddy that I found a lake that I was getting some decent bass out of and I wouldn't be suprised if I caught my biggest bass out of there before the hard water set in. I didn't get let down. Late October two years ago I landed that 22 1/8" bass that I have in my avatar, that's my trophy that I've been trying to surpass since then.

Good luck to you and your quest for a 5 lber, you'll be grinnin from ear to ear when you finally land one. grin.gif

For me a trophy is a fish that has a memory with it. I have a lot of trophy fish that were maybe only 18" in lengh, but there is a memory with it. IE, caught it fishing a way I am not used to, caught it through a tire, with a friend on a bet that I will get a fish this cast.. ect..

Today I was fishing with my brother and caught many 18" smallies... all trophies in my mind!

Duffman:

That is one nice fish! Did you end up putting her on the wall? Or just CPR?

Zoku....

She's still swimming I hope, and maybe she's added an inch in the last two years. Hopefully we can see each other once again this fall. grin.gif

I wish I had a scale at the time, she was a thick fall bass, I always wonder if it was an actual 7 lber. We got an accurate measurement mark on the canoe thwart, a mark that brings a grin to my face every time I see it. wink.gif

Although it was my biggest bass by far, without a weight or measurement at the time, the thought of putting it on the wall was shortlived. No regrets about letting her go. I think I'll wait till I get a 23"er before I mount one, and that day may never come.

The bass in my avatar is a 22 incher out of a metro lake. Caught her on an inhaler bucktail fishing for muskies. The fish faught like a muskie and I had no idea it was a bass till it got to the boat. The thing had the biggest mouth I've ever seen...HUGE! We didn't have a scale with, so after measuring her and a few quick photos I released her. Never really thought about keeping her, even though I just broke my personal best by 2 inches. I will probably get a repo made one day.

Every fisher has his or her own idea of a trophy. Wed night I landed a FAT 21 incher and my fishing partner asked if it was going on the wall. Nope, doesn't top the egg-filled 22 incher from early this summer, and even that one was released to swim another season.

I like Deitz's definition, my wall mounts are all up in the memory box.

I agree 22" which my biggest was 21.25" a couple of years ago. All I would need is a pic,but sometimes the camera is forgotten. So back she goes and the memory remains.

That is so awesome!! I'm heading out this evening to a little spot close to my place I've been fishin' from shore... gonna give it a go and try some topwater stuff.

With any luck... I'll get a personal best! Or at the very least... I'll just have fun. smile.gif
