Duck-o-holic
All this talk of fishing in duck boats has got me wondering... how many of you actually take your fishing gear out on duck hunting trips? I can't believe that on all of the great fishing lakes I've duck hunted, I've never packed a rod and tackle! Talk about the prime time of the year to be chasing hog walleyes! I can say I'm pretty one-track minded that time of the season... but come on? I really regret not tapping into the old "Cast and Blast" type of adventure! I think I've been missing the boat. How cool would that be to have a brace of divers and walleyes, or crappies and mallards? Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? What are your favorite areas to hit both?? My brother told me of waking up to shotgun fire at mallards on Leech when he was heading out after muskies.Duck-o-holic
wooduck26
I have never fished while hunting but I did have a BIG Northers hit a decoy weight as I was leaning over the front of the boat winding it up on Devils Lk a few years ago..........it was a Monster Pike, that when it hit the weight at the sureface it pulled the decoy outtta my hands and soaked me, and splashed water halfway to the back of the boat (16ft) It was Cool to see....... I have often thought it would be fun to take SMag decoy and put a sucker Minnow under it and let 'er go.........I bet on Devils Lk. youd get a hook up! icehousebob
We have a group that spends a few days goose hunting at Lac Qui Parle every year. We goose hunt the refuge blinds in the morning and after lunch, some of the guys go pheasant hunting and some fish Walleyes. If you can read river currents, the river below the LQP dam can be a fun place to fish. I've been known to show up a day or so before the rest of the group to do some goose scouting and some serious fishing.
tealitup
Be careful if you do fish or at least your boat is licensed. Waterfowl hunting does not require you boat to be- but you do if you are fishing.
fishermann222
When I was growing up I was told there are regs that say people can not fish AND hunt at the same time. As kids we used to always want to throw out a line with a weight and a sucker to catch a pike while hunting. Can anyone verify if this is legal or illegal. LQP can be a VERY fun place to catch eyes in the fall Been there done that.
mr wizard
We always bring the fishing gear! We have had great mornings hunting then off after crappies in the afternoon then walleye's at dusk. Sometimes it's difficult to locate fish with the turnover but when you find them it's usually feedbag on. Oh yes, it can be very cold, dipping hands for minnows but my kids have got some hawgs during the full moon in October.
Sartell Angler
I'm designating one weekend this season for a trip to LQP...gonna make it a full blown camp-cast-blast, although duck hunting will be the main focus. Apparently there is a nice campground right by the landing we are going to use that a couple of our friends stayed at 2 years ago. Will duck hunt til about noon, then do a little pheasant hunting and walleye fishing. Can't wait for the Fall!
cmoredrakes
My dad and I have done that fishin' when the ducks aren't flyin' thing. We caught few walleyes but mostly northerns. There were so many ducks at the time of year we went up to the duck hunting lake that the rods just took up room for guns and deeks. Nowadays, we shoot our limits or just plain get tired of sittng in 0 degree weather when there are no ducks, we go in drop all the gear off and take the fishin' gear out for some Waldos. But, it is pretty fun when we get to do combo trips like that often. Then we get walleyes and ducks for dinner at camp . But, the one hard thing about this is: tryin' to keep the bait alive and not freezin' up in the buckets .
koWALLEYEski
Oh boy that was fun. We were out on the river chasing some ducks and we shot a few that morning. we had our rods and frogs along so we ended up catching some nice smallies and a couple eyes. It was fun. everytime we go there now we bring all the gear for both ducks and fishies.
magnumthunder
to much of a headache. I'd just end up breaking rods and wrecking things. Beside NOTHING gets in the way of my waterfowling!
