Latest bird activity

Just putting out feelers for what the birds are currently doing. My guess is that there is early gobbling on the roost but not much right after and that the hens are in nesting mode after about 9 AM, leaving some gobblers lonely and looking. How far off am I (for youse guys that have been out in the last week)?

Sounds like what I've been seeing the last few days. Most of the gobblers won't come off the roost until after 8:00, assuming most are with hens. I haven't actually seen a bird while hunting yet. My cousin shot a jake yesterday that was with another one.

My most exciting moment this morning was when a squirrel used my back for a stepping stone, while it scampered throught the woods. Freaked me out! I heard him coming, but wasn't expecting that.

This morning I saw about 5-10 turkeys goin' by on the bus. They were strutting and feeding in a field by my house. I guess I was in the wrong place at the right time!! But, its just good to see that the gobblers are out moving and lookin' for some hens. {My season is this weekend } Hope everyone has a good season.

I hunted season D and it was pretty tough. Not much gobbling on the roost and it seemed many birds weren't gobbling at all(already with hens?). I was able to sneak up on some and saw quite a few, they just weren't gobbling and wouldn't respond to calls. Could have shot a small jake but passed it up. This was in zone 341.

Thanks for the info, all. My hope is to hear some birds tomorrow morning, to get an idea where to start. I will be carrying a bow and my wife will be shotgunning out of the same blind. If things go well, two birds will come in, one bird will drop when my arrow hits him, the other bird will take the downed bird as an opportunity to get in some ---whuppin' and my wife will do some whuppin' on that second bird. Ya just never know, could happen!!

I got permission to go after a gobbler we heard Tuesday morning when I go tomorrow morning. Hope he's still using the same spot. I've got a wedding tonight so I won't be able to go & try roosting him again. The weather doesn't sound very good for the last day, windy & rainy.

It's been tough, have hunted every day so far with zero to show. Saw my first gobbler today and had a hen make a friend out of my decoy but that's it. The gobbler must have been henned up. Very little gobbling on the roost and next to none on the ground. Frustrating because I know this area holds alot of turkeys and we have done well in the past. Area 462. But we still have one more day and anything can happen.

Hey you made me feel better about having so little luck anyway. At least I feel like it's the birds more than just me. I slept in this morning as I needed to work all day & was just plain getting too tired to enjoy hunting. I'm holding out hope to score tomorrow as well, hopefully before the rain. My season started Tuesday morning, was in the woods at 5:15, bird loaded in my vehicle at 7:00. Came right off roost and right in to my decoys. Area 467. My dad and uncle weren't so lucky, see birds every day but can't get them to come in, henned up, I must have had the only lonely bird in the area roosted by me.

Well one day left. I haven't heard or seen a bird while hunting since Tuesday morning. Sign shows the birds are there and moving but it just seems I'm always in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Hopefully things turn around Saturday.

Today must be national turkey day because the weather has made it nutts out there! Didn't hunt today, but had friends hunt on our land. This morning they were firing up outside the window like crazy around 5:10AM. By 6, they were down in the fields strutting away.

My friend's dad took one of 4 jakes that they called out of the fields and back into the woods. However, there were 5 gobblers and several hens still in the field. When they went to show me their bird, they saw another 4 gobblers. Incredible to see that many birds in a 1/4 mile square area.

I head out tommorrow to try and call/videotape for a friend. I just hope it's like this tommorrow.

Well at least we had some activity Saturday. We heard one bird gobble on the roost twice. Then silence util 8 am. Heard a tom on property we weren't able to hunt strutting with intermittent gobbling. Them we heard a gobbler farther down the ridge and closer to the property line. Made a move on him and it was obvious he had hens as well based on his sporodic gobbling as he moved down the ridge. Then we heard a gobble behind us around 9. Had my son shift his position so he could shoot that direction on his tree about 15 feet away from me. I just huddled against the tree as I wasn't planning on shooting because he's still looking for his first bird and called. After a while I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. He had his gun up but didn't shoot eventually the bird moved off. I thought it must of been a hen but he said it was a jake that was still too far out. I told him that I thought the bird seemed close enough and had him point to where it stood. It was close enough(25 yards). In his excitement he though it was around 40. We sat from another hour and went to the truck for some lunch and to head to another spot. When we got there there was a big tom stutting and gobbling in the corner of the field we were going to set up in. No hens in sight. So we worked to about 75 yards from him on the field edge and made a few soft yelps my lil duece, nothing. I made a few louder yelps, still nothing. The wind was howling. So a grabbed my boxcall and made a few yelps. He double gobbled back. I though here we go. I gave him one more series of yelps and he triple gobbled. I whisperd to my son to get ready. After 10 minutes no bird showed and no more gobbles. I hit the boxcall again and got a double gobble from quite a bit further away. We chased this tom the rest of the afternoon. He was alone, he'd respond to calls but head the other way. We each got him to about 50 yards twice. But since he responded to calls and even scrathing negatively we had no way of redirecting him towards us. I guessing he'd been shot at and probably hit sometime this spring as I had him roosted earlier and he responded negatively to calls then as well.

Oh well. At least we had action the last day. One thing I did notice is that when we left the woods before 8 the only gobbling wee heard was on the roost. Based on Saturday the best activity was later in the day.

I shot a nice tom on Monday mourning. This bird was by himself with no hens in sight or sound. Another guy I know, shot his bird on saturday and he had 5 toms come into his deeks with no hens.

Are the hens laying?
