Reel handle wraps?

I was curious to know if anybody knew of a product that is made that can be put over the top of the handle on your reel at the point it attaches to the rod to guard against cold fingers. Like a neoprene wrap or something??

If so, who makes them and where can you get them. Fishing on the river this winter I frost bit the finger that wraps around the handle and is always on the metal part of the reel. Still tingles to this day.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Mudman - you are sure right there! wink.gif

Deitz - I had thought about the tennis handle wraps as an option. Just wanted to know if there was a purchasable option out there. I think what I am going to do is cut a neopreme beer can cooly in half and then sew it together with fireline, cut a slit in it, slide it on my rod handle and then attach the reel through the slit. I think it would not get as bulky as the tennis grip wrap and would handle the elements a little better too.

There is another product sold in the electrical departments of Menards store that resembles electricians tape, but is of a different material. It is supposed to have some insulating qualities....I cannot think of the name of the stuff just off hand. Menards was posted as having this stuff.

Crappie Tom, I think the tape is called silicon tape. I`m not 100% but I think that`s what it is called. I use hockey tape. It gives a nice grip and doesn`t come off when wet. It does leave a sticky residue though.

Gerty, Could you possibly be refering to "Tommy Tape"? It's a silicon tape that adheres to itself, it's stretchy and can be used for a BUNCH of different applications. And it doesn't leave ANY residue. I've been using this tape for my ice reels for a number of years already and if I buy any new rods, I take the reel rings off and use the Tommy Tape. If you get over my way, It is available in our local farm supply store(Big R), in the electrical dept. by the wire nuts and ground clamps, etc. If you try this stuff, you're gonna like it.

Yes Tommy Tape is the stuff you want. Even comes in colors so you can color code your rods, so you know which one is which in your rod bag. My local Runnings store had it on clearance I bought 2 rolls, thinking now I should have bought more, maybe today...

Tommy Tape sounds like some good stuff. Last night at home, I did what I said I was going to do with the can cooly. Ended up working great. Maybe I should market it! wink.gif

The thing I like about the cooly I rigged up is that it is easily removable. May still want to get some of the Tommy Tape for a few rod handles that I have that don't have very good reel attachments. As I said, I am using the cooly only for the insulating purposes and not attachment.

Thanks for the ideas.

LundDuckBoat, Hey, Thanks for the heads up on the Tommy Tape clearance, Our Runnings store also has it on clearance, I picked up 4, there's 15-20 rolls left. Great buy on some really good tape. I guess they're gonna discontinue carrying it in stock, too bad frown.gif

I was looking through my Duluth Trading Co. Catolog last night and saw that they carry something called Extreme tape. It's a silicone tape and seems to be what everyone is talking about. Check it out at www.duluthtrading.com and search for "extreme tape." They sell it in a single roll or 6 roll pack.
