Wolf in Blooming Prarie

Recommended Posts

Wondering if anyone else heard about this. I know a guy who knows a guy that shot a wolf in blooming prarie while yote hunting. He said it was pretty small 50-60 lbs. They called the dnr and they just came and picked it up. Don't know if its true or not, just reporting what I heard.

There is a thread from last week on Predator Masters HSOforum where the guy who shot the wolf tells his story, gets flamed, etc. Pretty entertaining.

About 5 years ago I saw a wolf trotting across a field up near Forest Lake. Called the DNR, just to give them a little heads up, and the lady on the phone insisted I had seen a coyote. Watched the thing for about 5 minutes in my binocs, and determined it was a medium-sized male.

Years ago, my sister had a summer place on Two Inlets lake, up north of Park Rapids.

One morning while her and her son where walking their little dog, a huge Cougar stepped out of the brush and out onto the road.

Although she had never before seen one that was'nt in a cage, on a television screen, or in a book, she instantly knew that the animal she was seeing, presented a real danger.

She had ahold of the little dog told her kid not to run, did an about face and made her way back to the cabin, which was about a city block from the tee in the road where she seen the Cougar.

She said she said prayers all the way to the cabin, expecting at any moment to be attacked from behind.

She reported it to the DNR and of course they did'nt believe her, never even sent anyone out to check it and there was tracking snow at the time.

Cougar sighting occur all over the state and they always say they are pets that some one turned loose, or it is some other deal.

They turned up out in Maple grove, Savage, and a number of other places in the state.

Why is it such a big deal to admit that we might have a resident population of cougars, when they are sighted quite frequently?

I'll admit that I have'nt heard of any lately, but I don't get out and about as much as I used to, as all my rural relatives and friends have either died, or went urban!

I have heard that they frequently are visited by Wolves at Carlos Avery in Anoka county, so it's a hop, skip and a jump to anywhere else they want to go, using the waterways as travelways.

Also heard of a Moose or two down in the S.W. part of the state, Fisher being killed on the freeways around the cities, Canadian Lynx being trapped up near Duluth, even heard of a Wolverine that was run over on #35W years ago. Them critters can do some traveling!

There are fisher all around the Twin Cities. I also have been told that there is wolves in Carlos Avery. And we have quite a few lynx up here. I personally know two guys who each caught one. And I saw one one last year chasing hares in an alder swamp.

Yes it is definatly true. It weighed in at 70 pounds I know the guy who shot it. There was an article in the outdoor news a couple weeks back. I think there was one shot 5 years ago in the same area also.
