Summer fishing trip

AnglerJake

Recommended Posts

My 2 sons (19 & 14) and I are wanting to take a week's fishing trip this summer (probably June or July). Not really wanting to camp (although not entriely against it), also not needing luxury accomodations, just a decent cabin, can take our own boat(14'-6" with 25 hp motor), fix our own meals, etc. Looking for good walleye fishing. Would you go somewhere in Michigan, Wisconsin, or Minnesota; or Canada. Appreciate all ideas. PM if you wish. Thanks, Jake

If Canada is an option I would consider that before anything else. Baring any extreme weather changes you can pretty much guarantee quality fishing. My personal favorite is the English River in NW Ontario, but would recommend Red, Wabigoon, or Lac Suel lakes (also in Ontario).

I don't do much fishing in Wisconsin or Michigan, but I am however familar with many lakes here in MN. Lake of the Woods, Vermillion, Rainy, or many in the BWCA can produce quality walleye fishing just to name a few. Of course there always is Mille Lacs as well, but the previously listed lakes are much better.

I suggest taking a gander at the resorts page here on FM. There is a wide variety of lakes/resorts listed. Otherwise you can check with your local Sportsman show(s).

I would second the idea of going to Canada. I went on my first trip when I was 14 and it changed my view of fishing and the appreciation for the outdoors forever. It is just a whole different experience.

I will also second the list of lakes from Tonka Boy but add in Minnitaki. The options are endless from fly ins, remote drive tos, and lodges that are a short drive to town. Generally, a week of fishing there can be had for about the same as the average resort in the popular destinations here.

Hundreds of lodges can be found with a couple of simple searches on the internet. I can be more specific with suggestions if you would like to list preferences on species, remoteness of fishing, etc..

Good luck.

Canada is nice but it would be tough for me to get over the dump the Canadian Government comes up with. If you haven't been fishing in Canada its an experience you will enjoy. I would say either the English River or Flin Flon Manitoba.

If you wanted to go in Minnesota I would go to Lake Winnibigoshish. The Winnie area has some good Walleye fishing and you can try multiple lakes like Sand or Bowstring.

If you wanted to try Michigan go to Big and Little Bay De Noc by Escanaba. Big fish

Anglerjake, I guide around the twin cities and central Minnesota. Last summer I went to Lake of the woods, was my first time there. My wife and I stayed at Sportmans lodge on the rainy river. Our package included 2 nites and 1 day fishing on 1 of Sportsmans Launches. It was a great time with lots of fish caught. After that I used my own boat to fish and had a good time catching and releasing even more fish. Canada can be a good trip, but all comes down to, HOW MUCH $$$$$. Also, if they have meals for you, ask what are the meals? A friend of mine told me of one outfit that served peanutbutter sandwiches for lunch. I am to pay peanutbutter? I don't think so. Well which ever you choose, Good Luck!

I would highly recommend Lake Vermilion. The lake is full of walleyes. Plus you can tangle with smallies, northerns and muskies. Bay View Lodge is a favorite of mine. Its not cheap but has access to great fishing spots. I have caught limits of walleyes off their docks.

I would recommend hiring one of the local guides. What you learn from them in a day can get you through the whole week.

Good luck!

you can find what you need up here on vermilion...some decent priced cabins and fish of different species to keep you busy catching....plus with your size boat you will be able to find a place out of the wind if need be....wherever you go ,have fun, and set the hook!!................................................................garytheguide.com

Lake of the woods is a bit big for a 14 1/2 foot boat. Sometimes I feel my 18 foot boat is too small on

that lake.

Mille acs or even Winnie are more managable, but still big for your boat.

Vermillion would be my choice.

I've been to Cass Lake the last two years and the fishing has been great. I'm staying at the Cass Lake Lodge over the fourth of July. Plus if it gets to windy on the big lake, there are 7 others you can gain easy access to without taking your boat out. I don't hear much from people from MN about Cass. It seems like it is a little over-looked????
