RTF
I took a ride up to the lake this AM. South of the state boat launch, out in the middle were 3 shanty's/traps. I think that was out front of where the creek runs into the lake from RT 28. The shore by the boat launch was all iced over once again, but I did not test it. You could tell foot traffic came on and off of the lake over the weekend from the state boat launch area.

CNYFrank
You guys make it hard to work for a living . . .that and Tim working in the same building and giving me puppydog eyes to go fishing . . .oh, ok, but I have to leave by 2:30 at the latest to make the game in Oneonta!! My daughter said the Tahoe smelled like fish!! Could be worse.
RTF
Quote:Thanks RTF for the report it's all looking good for our trip on Wednesday. I can't believe how cold it is outside right now. But that dang sun can heat things up in a hurry. The ground has no frost on top and is a bit muddy and ice in the water dishes in the AM is thawed out by afternoon. All this and it has not climbed above 30 all week.
BigJohnnyIce
Hey everyone, I finally got a chance to get Tim's picture downloaded. Here it is from this past Saturday's outing. Tim, that 10" gill is covered up a little bit, but that is a bull. They both have a purple tint to them!! Great job with the perch, also. I know it was windy out there, so it had to be tough to get one picture. Hey, got some reports on some NICE open water fishing here in Western NY....the Wizard and I might be out there pretty soon, hopefully if things work out. Pre-spawn hog perch and later the Crappies move in. More to follow.
CNY Tim
If you get out in the boat with the Wizard I need a camera shot or something. Franky and I have a side bet going on on actually how many times you will be able to get out fishing this year. I took the over and Franky took the under Z fished yesterday I'll throw up a report. Thanks for posting the pic, should have more tomorrow. Winds will be 10-17 mph and with the windchill this morning the lake area temp was around 3 deg. this morning with the wind chill., Franky thinks well have the next couple of weekends to fish before the end, he maybe right. Z is riding shotgun with me tomorrow at 5 a.m.

Uh, without the wind chill it was actually 5 degree's this AM. It never got above freezing today, but that dang sun does some damage. That's for sure. Be carefull ! CNY Tim
Just got a report from Z he fished with Sara today all over the south end still a good 7" of ice down there, they caught 9 slobs between the two of em, everything deep was small so they would have had a terrible day if it wasn't for the shallows. I think he said he ran into FishingKing and Dave out there as well. Looking forward to tomorrow...
hanson
Hey Tim-If that gill is 10", how long are some of them perch?Nice catch dude!!!
BigJohnnyIce
Hey, you guys are making an over-under bets on how many times I get out on the boat this year. Nice I just need to come up with some better excuses next year to get out more. I am hoping to get out this Friday on the boat with the famous Wizard and next Wednesday with him, too. Then after that, I am hoping to take him out on my boat on Canadice Lake for some crappie fishing. I hope that you guys do good ice fishing tomorrow....Tim was getting me jealous today when I talked to him on the phone. I know around here (western ny) there is not any safe ice around at all. That is why I feel lucky to know you guys out your way to have some other options when things this way are not safe. Well, good luck tomorrow. The Wizard and I will be on the liguid stuff soon. :cool
BigJohnnyIce
PS: Hey Hanson, Tim doesn't lie (too much LOL), so that gill that is behind the 'smaller' one is a 10" Bull....so those perch are pushing 14". I have seen them and personally caught those perch from there, but Timmy and Tuzzy have got the big bull gills this year out of our crew.
CNY Tim
Chris there around 12 or better but when they got that smallmouth head on them there a guaranteed 14" but you'll have to ask Frank about those he usually get's the jalopies I just can't seem to get past 13 7/8" oh well. Well the bite today and the fish for that matter were few and far between I ended up with 13 keepers but only 6 hogs, I think Frank said he caught 10 keeperes released all 10-11" males. Z had a few nice pigs as well but we just never found any consistency what so ever we stayed in the shallows and the ice was a solid 7" maybe even gained a little more than that since Saturday. Fished with FishingKing most of the day and Craig, Z's friend in the morning. Tank I think had 15 keepers and Billy had 9 or so. We moved around quite a bit and did some hole hopping alot of good hard work for a few slammers. Lost one of demon jigging spoons on a pickerel. Z caught a fallfish, and I think he had a pickerel on a couple of times. Craig caught a smallmouth. That is all Big Johnny till Friday and then hopefully it's crappie time

RTF
How thick was the ice and how is the shore ice on the south end ?
CNY Tim
We went in off the south east corner and the shore although pushed up was frozen solid. Welcome aboard FishingKing! I'd put Tank at the top for numbers and Franky at the top for quality and me I am caught in the middle sucking fumes off the both of em. "Z" buddy thanks for the perch and what happened to that big bullhead?? it had Tank written all over it? RTF your looking at 7.5" of pretty good ice at least and you will be fine for today and tomorrow if you wanna give her ago with junior... Maybe see ya Saturday... CNY Tim
Bibik has always been first come first serve as long as I can remember. I liked Marble the best but that's a done deal. I have permission through a land owner on another street on the east side different than Mohawk Valley Joe's spot. That's all I have to say bout dat... CNY Tim
Just talked to Tank., Dark Cloud and Billy are coming up Saturday so in honor of Dark Cloud's return to the frozen tundra I'll be on darago with my southern brothers Saturday. Tuzzy will be with me and it looks like breakfast at the diner will be in order. See you guys out there Saturday. Talked to Mohawk Valley Joe and he's done for the season. Northshore I hope that shoulders doing better.
hanson
Holy smokes!I thought a few of those perch were hovering around 14". Nice!! Even out here in the midwest, 14" perch is amazing!!A few of our perch factories are down right now but Lake Mille Lacs is been producing some dandies all winter. I think I mentioned earlier, I haven't made it there and I'm not going to this winter. Lake Winnibigoshish in MN, Devils Lake, ND, and even the South Dakota glacial lakes haven't been pumping out the large perch like they used to. Fished out I suppose. North Dakota had a rediculously high possession limit when that lake was at its peak for perch. Now it in an awesome walleye and pike fishery.Have fun guys. Sounds like your ice is dwindling.I'm hitting the open water tomorrow for catfish. We got into a good mess of them last weekend with an 11lb channel cat being the big fish for the day. Lot of fish in the 4-7 pound range though. Fun!
CNY Tim
Chris - BigJohnnyIce will be posting a couple pics of the slobs we caught today in the deep water. This will probably be the last Canadarago on ice report for the season unless FishingKing gives it another run tomorrow. Well I must say that it was great to see Dark Cloud out there today on the frozen tundra. We started with a hearty breakfast at the Richfield Springs diner. Well fueled and amped up to finish strong we started in the shallows and found a couple of break offs and very few keepers. CNY Frank worked his tail off to manage two slobs in there and FishingKing caught a nice perch and some decent bluegill in the shallows. The big perch action was out deep and Tank did not dissapoint as he tipped 12 big slobs to the scale. Just like most of the season Tank has had the upperhand in deepwater and today was no different. I had 9 nice jacks. Dark Cloud had a few and Billy had 5. Weather was perfect and I added to my sunburn some more . The light snow that fell last night had pretty much melted off and the shoreline was surprisingly tight as we exited. Ice was still 7" thick with plenty of air bubbles in it. Tuzzy had quite a few little perch to keep him busy and enjoyed his day as well. Frank hit a couple of beautiful rock bass. Z and Sarah fished the shallows south of us and found it tough going there as well except for the smaller perch where everybody caught a bunch of those. Wayne was hammered by small fish all day in the shallows but he still caught quite a few fish... I just wanted to say to my fishing friends that even though we had a screwed up season weather wise we saw a lot of promise in Canadarago for the future. Never and I mean never have we seen the amount of small perch that we have caught this season which makes us feel that next year and the year after should be even better. I want to send out a special thanks to Jamie at Your Bobbers Down your jigs are the absolute finest when it comes to going small and going deep. Thanks to the hardcores for fishing with me most of the season andyou know who you are. Can't wait to do it all again next season
