BobberTom
hey hoytmystic, from the reviews i have read everyone seems to think the scout is a good option for the $ . I am also looking into getting one. If you get one let me know what you think of it. Thamks, Tom
tdk
I bought one at the ice fishing show, used it once on Winnie in 18 ft of water. Worked great. I had a perch come up to the camera head on. It got so close that I couldn't even see it's eyes. All of a sudden I could tell that it opened it's mouth and tried to eat the camera. The bluegill shape. Neat to watch, waiting for a northern to try and take it, Could be interesting.
fishermn
I will have one within a week, I will let ya know! Has anyone used them in the downview mode yet? I am interested in how well that works...
Deitz Dittrich
The scout works great in the downview mode... Its very easy to use peroid!.. a great unit for the money!
frozen toes
After using mine for a week, here is my take on the camera.Pros- Fish shape cam does not spook fish, I think it attracts them. The monitor shows great detail. The design is easy to handle.Cons- Kind of time consuming to set up in deeper water. Without a tripod the camera is difficult to stay where you want it.I would highly recommend buying a tripod, I bought the cheap $15 one and love it. In clear and somewhat stained water I have not had a problem with being able to see fish and structure. One other tip I have, don't let the camera hit the bottom in sandy soil. It sends up a cloud of silt that takes awhile to clear away, even in slight current. I really like being able to see what is swimming around and seeing the bottom content. I have gotten to see numerous pike and bass eyeballing the cam. I usually have the vex and cam so I share the cam with a buddy while I use the vex. I really don't think you will regret buying one, they are a lot of fun to use.
Chad Wold
Frozen toesHow long does the battery last? have you used it at night ?? Im thinking about 1 myself but was concerned with battery life
frozen toes
According to AV they should last around 8 hours or so. I have used it for around 7 hours and it died, butthat was with the unit sitting on the ice all day. I think if you keep it off the ice a little, it should last longer. In the water I fish, the lights worked fine in early morning. The water here has just a slight stain to it. Hope this helps.
kslipsinker
I purchased one a couple of weeks before Christmas. I really like it. A great value for the money. I work at Gander, and we can't keep them on the shelf. If we get 6 or 8 in, they are usually gone in less than a day. I get more calls from people looking for cameras that everything else combined. SCHAAKATTACK
I am very satisfied with mine. I was out on Monday and I learned alot in 4 hours. It was amazing to see how Sunnies could inhale the lure and not have a twitch in the line. It was also cool to see a nice size Northern come into the screen. I always knew when it was coming back around because the rest of them would leave in a hurry. Battery wise 4 hours no problem, so I would say I would have got 2 more hours for sure. This is probably not going to be anyones choice for a night time use camera. I am curious abot the $15 tripod. Were did you get it and how much does it weigh? Bang for the buck-definitely worth it for me.
Deitz Dittrich
Shack- the $15 dollar tripod weighs almost nothing... Well worth the $.
SCHAAKATTACK
Deitz-Who makes it and where do I find them at. I would like to check it out. Do you know if the AV hardcase is compatible? I really wished I had something to put it in. TIA
Deitz Dittrich
Shack- Aqua Vu makes the tripod.. it holds the camera in the direction you want and and the depth you want... Most major stores should carry it.. it retails for $14.99 And, unfortunatly, NO.. AquaVu does not have a hard case for the Scout yet. Thier idea for making the scout was to make it as affordable as possible. All other units(except for the Quad360) have a hard case that you can buy.. the scout somewhat comes in its own soft case! Log
I sure get a kick out of seeing the fish in their natural surroundings, my problem is that I'm hypnotized by what's on the tube instead of watching my bobber.
Got_Ice
I own a Scout and I've had it out 5 or so times. In clear or slightly stained water you can see fine. If the water is dirty it doesn't work so well. My buddy has an OVS 460 and his doesn't work much better in dirty water. Also it works great in down viewing mode. I would reccomend getting the $15 tri-pod. Wouldn't spend the money on the $100 one because the cheap one works just fine. Nice unit for the money. I would like it if the cable wound up a little easier but what can you expect for $200.
Got_Ice
One last thing. I was in really clear water at night and couldn't see much at all. This isn't really a good camera for night viewing. Just my opinion.
goldeye
Anybody used a Scout on LOW, how well does it work in the stained water in the winter/summer.
Matt Breuer
I don't even bother bringing a cam to LOTW, but a client had his AV with on Red and could see quite well. I was astonished. I brought my Scout up and could actually see a few feet in front during the day.Evenings here in Bemidji have been pretty good with the camera due to pretty good water clarity on many of the lakes.I love the Scouts we run, they're a great tool if you have downtime or kids to entertain! goldeye
MattWhat is the reason for not bringing your scout to LOW?
Matt Breuer
In past experience LOTW has not produced good results with the cameras, due to extremely stained water. That's why I leave it home when traveling to Red or LOTW, I've never had much sucess. Although, like I said above, it worked on Red last week. Philo
Is that tripod you guys are talking about one that hooks onto the camera itself or does it hold the cord? I looked at the aqua vu HSOforum and I gather that it fastens to the cord. I noticed a tripod at the ice show that attaches to the camera itself, not the cord. I thought that might be something to consider also. Anyone used one of the tripods that fastens right to camera?
Deitz Dittrich
Philo, I have used both.. but like the one that attaces to the cord and suspends the camera off the bottom... rather than the one that attaches to the camera.. but thats just my opinion!
