attaching lures to line

Some jigs come with a small clip on them, others have nothing. Most of the time I just tie the jig directly to the line with no snapswivel. After a while thou end up with some line twist. Think the snapswivel would add too much to the jig and take away some of the action or scare off the fish. Plus with some of the smaller jigs the snapswivel is bigger than the jig. What does every one else do.

I agree, but I also think line twist may be a bigger problem.

I use 2 lb diameter power pro which has 8 lb strength, then I tie on a barrel swivel and attach 2-6 feet of flourocarbon then the jig. This is for a verticle presentation late fall and ice fishing.

For most ice jigs I tie directly on to the line, abrasion on ice and hopefuly fish faces make it neccessary to re-tie often. For larger jigs and verticle jigging things I use a no knot type fastener for the quicker changing ability.

I would say most often I just tie directly to the lure. Many time with very active lures, like some spoons, its a good idea to put a small swivel up the line about 1.5' -2' up the line. Be aware, sometimes this swivel will get more action than the lure itself. If this should happen.. its time to downsize!

When using a jig with a whole minnow under a bobber I will tie the jig directly to the line. When using a minnow head with a jigging spoon I will use a snap swivel direct to the spoon. The swivel is smaller than the spoon and will not spook the fish. I wish tackle manufacture would come out with colored swivels.

I always tie the jig directly to the line. You will need to re-tie your jig every once in a while.

For those that do use a swivel, why do you, why is it better?

Just wondering if I'm missing something?

So do you use swivels when jigging in the open water too?

I do a lot of jigging during hard and open water, I've never heard of using a swivel. Wouldn't that increase your chance of breaking the line? Wouldn't you still have to check and re-tie your knots from the jigging?

Just a spinoff, what knot do you prefer? I don;t know the name of the knot, but you thread thru the eye of the hook about 8 in., make a loop, wrap around the loop and main line with tag end 4 times and stick the line end thru the loop, pull tight. cool.gif

I am sure that is the fisherman's knot. I use that and the polymar knot exclusively. One thing I do with the power pro ice line is to first make a granny knot, then tie the fisherman's knot. That is one strong knot and will not come undone wink.gif

nobody brought up the fact that a snap swivel will add so much medal to your presentation. I like using a buckshot rattle spoon, and once you put a minnow head on the treble, you have covered up all the metal that isn't used for attraction.

My brother and I fish for jumbo pike and we sometimes retie after every fish, and that's with 40lb. Fireline.

When i got line twist, i'd just bring up my spoon and let it unwind, granted it does get tougher when you're jiggin deeper than 15 feet. Twist has never been such a problem that i've lost fish or had line break.

Line twist isnt so much a issue of losing fish or breaking line as it is a lure presentation issue. If every time you stop jigging your lure just sits and spins you wont catch as many fish. I tie a quality barrel swivel up my line about 3 " or more depending on what Im fishing for. I will use a cross snap when I go direct to a lure or tie to a O ring.

I've used the trilene knot for years. Through the hole 2 times, wrap 4 times, back through both, lick and pull tight. Easy to tie and works awesome. Straight to the jig. I use a metal leader under tip ups for northerns but that's it. I've never used a swivel on a light jig. May have to try it some day.
