New doe regulations

So what do you all think of the new regulations on doe permits and how we acquire them? If you haven't heard yet, here's the link http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/news/releases/index.html?id=1058887975

Basically, the areas have been moved into one of three different chioces, lottery, management, and intensive. My zone has a ton of deer, but is lottery for some reason, but thats fine with me because I buy that license where I get one buck and one doe through archery and rifle seasons. Just wondered how these new regs are going to sit with hunters.

It's fine by me. I have received a doe permit every year in my area since the mid eighties. This saves me the trouble of remembering to send my application in on time.

Still trying to figure it out, especially how it relates to bowhunting and the special licence that they had last year that allowed you to shoot two deer with a gun or bow. Can't find the new regs online, has anybody seen the books at the hunting outlets? I did see by the map in the Sunday Strib that the zone that I slug hunt in - 426 - has been split! 426a is a intensive harvest and 426b is a management zone. It will be interesting to see how these new regs affect the overall harvest numbers.

Regulation books will be available on Friday, although most stores will not have them out until Saturday.

That's the way I read the lottery areas. Just like the old way of applying for doe permits. If you get a lottery tag you can use it to take a buck or a doe but not both. The only way to take more than one is the mgmt. and intensive harvest which you can buy at half price. That's the way I see it.

Lottery areas--same as previous years, you apply for an extra tag to take an antlerless deer, can shoot a buck with your regular tag. Deer limit 2: 1 buck and 1 antlerless

Managed Permit areas-you can take a doe on your regular license in permit areas or a buck in the entire zone, and you can also buy a Management tag to shoot one additional antlerless deer. Deer limit 2: 1 buck or doe and 1 antlerless deer
example: if I buy a regular deer license for zone 2, I can shoot a buck in any area of zone 2, OR I can shoot a doe in area 201,203,211,214,221,224,235,247,249,251,298, on my regular license without purchasing another license. That's one deer for one license.
Intensive harvest zones--same as managed permit areas, but you can buy up to 4 additional Intensive harvest tags in addition to your regular license. Deer limit 5: 1 buck or doe, 4 antlerless deer

All you need to know is which permit area you hunt in, then check to see if the area is a Managed permit or Int.Harvest area.

Unless I am mistaken, lottery for doe tag means if you get a tag, you can shoot a doe or buck, not both.

fivebucks you are correct. I myself hunt deer both with bow and shotgun and am considering buying a muzzleloader to try my luck at that. Being they offer the all season deer license I will purchase that. This way I can take a doe and a buck, its just that they have to be with different means of weaponry.

I tried the all-season last year.
Very worth while purchase.
Getting out for muzzleloader was a nice addition.
We hunt zone 4, and opening weekend of firearms is only 2 days.
Great to get out in early December with the gun.

hallelueya! god must be in his heaven because the State of Minnesota finally has started making some sense of their deer hunting program. They seem to have gotten on board with the idea that there are alot of deer and doling doe permits out to the lucky few is no way to manage the herd. I know where I hunt up in Z1 that there are tons of deer and they have been rather miserly with the doe permits. Now, I have been looking and can't seem to find the info in the regs but is it ok to shoot a deer with a bow and a gun (seperate licenses) or do we have to get the "all season" tag. just a question but am very excited about deer season this year.

I know, my area is loaded, and we're still in lottery! I think the state has been trying to be extra careful with the herds after those bad winters around 1995 I think it was. I think they've been a little too cautious, but hell, I can't complain with the amount of deer around!

The all season you can shoot a doe and a buck.
You cannot buy a firearms and archery seperate and shoot two deer.
Although, in certain areas, you can buy intensive harvest permits for antlerless deer only.

How is this going to work with the youth hunters? In our Zone(4)the 'b' weekend and our area there is no lottery for the doe license. Now are they considered part of the party to have a tagged filled, or does the same rule apply as last year(shoot their own and tag their own.)
Starting to get confused with all these new and hopefully better regs.

The youth licensese are even more screwed up then the rest. I read somewhere about youth licenses being cheaper , and I'm sure they still get the automatic doe permit. The youth rules sucked for me because when I was a youth was during the bad winters a few years ago, so I didn't get my doe permit
