JohnMickish
I posted a very similar question in the open water forum, now its the ice guys turn. If price was not an issue, who makes the best cold water mono fishing line out there? I'm talking in the "normal" pound ranges that we use, like 1-10 lb. Not a question of what you use, but what is the best.
Tod Todd
2# P Line CCX a non paid endorsement very supple but tough and doesn't hold water
Mike Walerak
Seagar line is good but very spendy. I have settled on Suffix Elite line for most of my fishing both openwater and ice fishing.
Jim Kusuda
For tricking fussy bluegills in shallow water, Trilene 100% fluorocarbon ice in 1 lb. test. Amazingly strong enough when break testing knots. Allows for a better presentation with more jig movement.
BartmanMN
Best I've used and continue to use is Gamma ESP ice. I like it better than P Line
Eric_Kruger
im a big fan of the sufix ice magic, and trilene in the solar color.
TruthWalleyes
I think PLine Flouroclear is the best...Works the best of everything i've tried. I never go below 4# and rarely below 6# though... Maybe i'm all wet and need to try something new, but so far i've stripped everything else i've tried off the reel besides PLine.
Rick G
Either the original Vanish or the Berkley Pro grade floro, have found both to be good for the type of fishing I do.
Corey Bechtold
Add another 1 for the Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon! If you fish very pressured fish or clear water this line is great. Having said that I will opt for another option from Berkley. I have been fishing the Solar colored Micro Ice and absolutely LOVE it. Fish don't seem to care about seeing the line. There are other great aspects to the high vis line. One is that you can actually see the line to be able to get it threaded through the jig eye. Another is the detection of ultra light bites! Seeing the line "slide" under the water is totally misunderstood. It can help detect bites that even spring bobbers cant detect! There is a plethora of good lines on the market. Find a company you trust and stick with them. I am a Berkley fan and have been for years! If it ain't broke, don't fix it... Good fishing, Corey Bechtold
Valleye
Not a question of what you use, but what is the best. In my opinion I think it is the best and yes I use it. 2 and 4 lb Gamma esp Ice line and also their Fluorocarbon counterpart. The 4lb line's diameter is thin. Compared to Trilene's ice lines it thinner. I've used the 4lb test line casting small jigs in the summer shore fishing for Perch on Lake Michigan and its tough as nails. I agree with Corey, stick with what your comfortable with. If you haven't made a decision on line all the lines mentioned have their strengths, its what makes you happy that counts. JohnMickish
I'm not looking for suggestions on what to use, just opinions on what people think is the BEST. You know, a research kind of thing.
Lawrence Luoma
To me it's up to the style your fishing. If you're using a spring bobber or a graphite rod to feel the bite you want some kind a florocarbon or poly line with sinking properties. If you're a tightliner like myself your gonna want to use a straight mono that floats. Spring Bobber or Feel, I'm using P-line Floroice. Tightlining, I'm using Stren Ice Hi-vis. With that said, if they made a Trilene Micro Ice in Yellow that would be the best!!
Scott O.
I like to use Northland Bionic Ice Line on most of the ice rigs. Stays pretty soft for knot tying and has great strength. I like its Bionic Ice Flourosilk for smaller jig applications.
Chad Peterson
I like to use Northland Bionic Ice Line on most of the ice rigs. Stays pretty soft for knot tying and has great strength. I like its Bionic Ice Flourosilk for smaller jig applications. I will have to agree with you Scott. I used p-line in the past with good results, but I decided to give the Northland Bionic a try. Well, I really like it and it holds up on the bigger fish. I usually fish panfish, but when you get a northern or walleye on, it holds up. Northlander
I like the Suffix Ice Line and if I can find the Gamma I use that. I have a bunch saved up but do they even make it anymore?
Fred_Bear
I like the Suffix Ice Line and if I can find the Gamma I use that. I have a bunch saved up but do they even make it anymore? Black Knight Industries makes gamma line, you can get it from their HSOforum. Sportsmen's Direct also carries the ESP ice line and the fluorocarbon, I bought some through them last winter. Charlie Mason
I use the 3 lb organge Suffix, with a 2 lb fluorocarbon leader on 20 some panfish rods, the 3 lb is soft enough to straighten out on the smallest jigs, and even when I am fishing with a spring, you never really quit employing tightline techniques to double your success rates. Cyberfish
Gold Hi vis stren! it is the only line I can see under water, to detect those super light panfish bites
Matt Johnson
I'm on the hi-vis bandwagon as well. I like the 2# Vicious Ice in hi-vis yellow. I'll use the 3# from time-to-time as well. Works great for a variety of panfish situations. I like the copolymer attributes that it offers which helps with both durability and performance. This line also comes in clear if you're not a fan of the hi-vis yellow... I guess I have a nice 50/50 split on my reels between the two colors... Cyberfish
hmmm i might have to check out the Vicious yellow, would like the 3# option if it is visable enough for me
Corey Bechtold
You should try the 3lb Trilene Micro Ice in the Solar color. Less stretch than most other mono's and amazing strength! Good fishing, Corey Bechtold
Lawrence Luoma
Corey, problem the Micro Ice solar is still to hard to see underwater. Just wish they made a gold Micro Ice. I hate to say it but with what looks like Stren Ice no longer being made I may be using Suffix orange this season. Problem with Vicious is that it is a copolymer. Tightlining we need a line that floats so Mono is the way to go.
