Rod protection

Recommended Posts

It took me many rod tips to figure this one out. Also, I never liked the soft cloths they used to line the inside of most of the rod bags on the market, since they would always seemed to grab my hooks and never let go.

This year I purchased the ~$60 hard case Frabill came out with. It holds about 6-8 combos, and has a 'non-hook swallowing" foam liner.

Great purchase for me, when you're protecting $400-$600 worth of rods & reels, $60 is nothing.

the five gallon bucket gone? Not altogether Jim.....

these five gallon buckets have been modified to hold eight to nine rod combo's each. With some pvc cut to size, a few nuts n bolts and the right rack on your quad, the bucket still serves a very useful purpose in my program.

I've used a few from the cheap nylon ones, clam rod locker and a rod box by fish innovations. The clam rod locker works great if you rods are of different lengths. I typically had 4 rods in each, sometimes 5 depending on the lengths. I went with the rod box from fish innovations last year and love it. Holds 6 rods, comes with 4 tackle boxes but cant put 2 more in there with a bunch more storage. I love it, but it is pretty big so some might not like it. As far as rod protection, you can't get any better.

I used to use the tube/bag combo carriers. I could only get three rods in each one so this year I switched over the the Clam rod locker. I obviously haven't had it on the ice yet but I am impressed in that I can get 6 of my combos in it, plus some spare line spools and such.

The rod locker is a small price to pay for the investment that it is carrying.

I currently use two plano takedown shotgun cases I can get 4-6 rods per case. and they arent as bulky as the otter box....This year however I am going to give the new Striker Brands Bag that resembles the old Stone legacy bags....I believe it is the Striker Ice Transporter.

I picked up the Frabill locker this year, haven't had it on the ice yet, obviously, but I like what I see so far. I have 7 combos of all different lengths in it as we speak. They don't move an inch when I aggressively shake it. I have also laid hands on the Otter Locker, I liked the looks of it as well, seems like a great product. However, the Frabill is essentially the same thing (save parking a car on it ;)), noticeably less bulky, and about $20 cheaper. That is just my opinion and what I had available to me in the stores in my area.

i have my cheap 5 gal bucket carrier that i can put 3 or 4 in vertically, with my modded portable i added horizontal fishing rod holders for another 4-6 and for summer storage i purchased a plastic hard sided double shotgun carry case that i can hold 6-8 depending on size & organizational skills.

i laughed when in store this am as store barely had any ice fishing product out but one thing they did have was ice rod carryng cases for $85 that holds 6, plastic sided foam padded double shotgun carry case $25

I love my Marcum Rod cases but they haven't made them for a bit now. I also have a Srone legacy rod bag it it's a good bag too. I'll need to check some of these out and some of my rod bags are getting pretty worn with years of hard use.
