Fall radishes

Recommended Posts

I want to plant a fall crop of radishes, when is a good time to plant them? I am in the twin cities area. I want to plant a variety called german giants, a couple with a plot by mine in a community garden grew some this spring and they were huge, tasty, and not woody at all inside. They gave me a few to try. So far I have only found the seeds online, suppose I will order them. Here is a pic of them next to a regular size light bulb.

I have never grown that variety. I always grow Daikons. White and 1-2 inches across and 12-15 inches long. They are the mildest radish I have ever eaten. They keep for 3-4 months in the fridge. Anyway.....I planted mine about 10 days ago. You can plant them now.

I had looked up midsummer planting myself after the bunnies infiltrated my garden perimeter. The U of M said the average end to growing is 9/11 and to count back the days from then to allow maturity for what you are trying to plant.

You can plant them from the middle of August until  Labor day. I grow the German giants every year and my best radishes are those in the Fall. French breakfast is another good variety. Just don't plant to deep or to thick, those Germans need room to grow.
