Park Rapids Foliage down, grouse numbers?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,
I'm thinking of going up NW of Park Rapids on Thu & Fri for a day or 2 of grouse & woodcock hunting 101 with the pup and myself. Can anyone tell me if the leaves are down in that area yet or how much cover is still up? My only real goal is to get the pup into some birds. Is it worth hunting this area or are the grouse so few & far between that the pup may not find any birds? If you don't want to talk about it on the board you can contact me here: clark dot koenen at thomson dot com. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Hunted south and west of Zerkle this past weekend, only saw two birds and did not get a shot off. The trees have alot of leaves left and the underbrush is thick. Hopefuly the hard freeze this week and south wind will drop them so you can actuly see into the woods. I will be back to the same area this weekend. I did perty good there last season, got birds each time out so I'm hopefull. Bring lots of water for your dog, sounds like its supose to be in the 70's. Good luck and hunt safe.

We just got back from hunting in the Parkrapids area we seen 6 grouse all in the same area cover is still to thick but the leaves are starting to drop . we had alot of trouble with ticks i have never seen so many we had to stop and pick them off of each other. the dog was completly covered good thing i have a white dog. Most ticks were the smaller deer ticks which makes things worse

Lake Alice, we are on lake Scott, off of the Pine lake Forest County Road. Is your cabin on this road also? I hunt around your area a ton, I'm sure if you hunt the area youve been by the place plenty of times. Email me and well have to meet up on the trails one of these days!

Just got back from a quick trip there. Leaves are pretty much down in the understory, not a problem. Finding birds can be a problem. This is the worst I have seen for a long time. Sunday afternoon we put up two, Sunday evening none, but it was windy Sunday. Monday morning we put up 5 in the first hour and a half, after that maybe three for the rst of the morning. Great weather, great scenery, great friends, great dogs. Yes, the ticks are lousy thick.

We are on 95 btwn 3 and 4. I'm not familiar with your area--you must be down north of Emmaville somewhere. I have not had a reason to leave the area right around the cabin to hunt in the three years we've been there.

Anyway, I'll be up there with my young kids and old dog for four days on the 21st. Good luck if you get out this weekend.
