Depth finder wiring for atv?

mnhunter2

Question

I have a Helix 7 that I have added to my Polaris atv for ice fishing and mostly use the gps and tracking over the lake contours. The problem is when I have the unit on and turn off the atv and then restart it the power changes enough to lock it up and it won't run intill you shut it off and restart it. Very frustrating when we are running and searching for fish. Have tried direct wiring to battery but still does it, any ideas?

Battery is fully charged and was load tested by dealer and is okay, I think when the starter engages the load draws most of the power and the helix locks up because of the low voltage and when full power returns it in this half off mod.

Those are very sensitive to even the smallest drop in voltage, especially with the smaller AV batt. Only cure for that is hooking it to a normal small 12v batt direct, as you normally would do. Never a good idea to have a sonar/GPS running off your starter batt for just that reason. Works in a boat because the drop in a group 24 or 27 batt has enough reserve not to drop past that critical point.

I wonder if a diode and a big capacitor would hold the voltage up long enough?  Or another battery... Or a GPS that isn't so picky about voltage.

I'm not sure that your going to get away from it. I have the same issue when using my GPS on my Dual sport bike. Unless you hook it up to it's own Vex battery or something. If you remember to shut it off before turning off the wheeler you may not have the whole reboot thing but it's still a pain! :(
