Cleaned the Grill Again

Recommended Posts

made burgers on the grill last night.  Left the grill on again, only 23 hours this time.  I think I may got get some charcoal and use my Weber for a while.  What's odd is I'm making steaks in about an hour so I turned the grill off, don't want to waste gas.

You just need to make a sign.... "Grill on" and put it on the door where you go back in the house.... Or set a rock on the top of the grill when you take the stuff off of it and shut it off.   Then you will notice it.  Or a piece of cardboard... If the cardboard is black and crispy you forgot to turn it of.

LOLOL  I have done that too.  A couple of gas grills back I had a brand new one that when I went to use it the second time I was out of propane.  I thought what a cheap grill.  (and it was a pretty good one)  I found a loose fitting (I put it together)  OOps.  But I have left one on too and when I walked out on the deck the next morning I could still smell something cooking.  Yup I did the LL thing and left it on.  LL you may have to go electric with a George Foreman.  My buddy used to love his.  Looked goofy as heck.  We are all at a campgrounds with our grills and campfire rings to cook on and he plugs in his new gizmo and starts cooking.  We all laughed our butts off.  BUT it did a great job.

Ok, I'm resetting my grilling life and going to do better.  The grill is on and I've got the Hasselback sliced potatoes in the oven with healthy amount of bacon grease on them.  I'm turning this grill off when I'm done tonight.

btw- when you chop up 3 pounds of bacon and fry it for RH's ABT sausage you end up eating 1/2 a pound of it so remember to start with more than you want to end up with.  You also get a nice amount of grease to save for future cookings.  It's a win/win/win/win deal.

I'm trying to not rush things like I usually do.  I fried up the bacon and cut the cheese into tiny pieces.  I will grind tomorrow and let "meld" for two days and then stuff on Saturday.  Usually I rush things and screw it up along the way.

Btw I did make ABT burgers the other day using ground beef, bacon, jalepenos and cheese.  Very good.

The charcoal Weber is not foolproof in all respects as I can attest. Christmas Eve while under the influence of caipirinhas, I narrowly averted certain scorn and derision by nearly attempting to put the chops on the grill without 1st putting the grate back in it. I thought it looked odd when I opened the lid with the first chop already in the tongs ready to go. Good thing I looked quick or it would've landed in the coals. Needed some quinine water and juniper berry extract upon my return to the kitchen to calm my frazzled nerves from what might've been a rookie mistake.

I was thinking, and believe I might have a solution to LL's recent s lean toward grill pyromania. However,  a learning curve will be involved.....here's what do, for the food, and indirectly It shuts off the grill. Normally the lid is always down, and when I have a minute or two to go, I shut the grill off. Ever notice how a grill will put out smoke right as it starts cooling? Yup. Gives the food a tad more flavor...and the grills off. Silly maybe, but I've always done that last "smoke-up" at the end...might work for LL, and even save his house... not to mention keeping us from thinking of him every time we see this album. ;)

Lol that would have been a bummer to sacrifice a beautiful chop to the charcoal gods!!! :D:D

My brother in IA made a major sacrifice one time along those lines. He decided it would be a cool idea to take on a wedding reception with a borrowed roaster unit. He bought 2 lambs from me, had them dressed whole, came up and got them after buying a couple monster-sized coolers at Cabela's to put them in. I could see the handwriting on the wall on this one as none of these guys had made a practice run to see how the unit would operate. They were flying by the seat of their pants. They stuck somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 bags of charcoal in the thing, put the lambs on the spit and let 'er buck. Bear in mind there was likely only about 100 lbs. worth of meat in there. About 2 hours and many alcoholic beverages later they decided to check on it. To their horror, both lambs had fallen off the spit and were burning up on the coals below. They managed to salvage only about 10 lbs of it., then made a mad dash to clean out freezers in order to come up with enough meat for the reception. A grave error as we're fond of saying

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
