Supper Clubs

Recommended Posts

Supper Clubs was brought up in the good morning thread, why not discuss them.  There is one north of Walker, The Ranch House.  The booths have wagon covers on them and the Salad Bar ("you can help yourself to the salad bar") is a pedastal bath tub.  Popovers are the specialty and if you don't hear "Happy Birthday Song" three times every time your there with a cupcake brought out with a sparkler it would be a rare thing, most people lie I think.

When I was a kid there was a place called Bromleys just north of Hackensack overlooking Ten Mile Lake that is gone now.  I think all they played was Neil Diamond music there, ate there a zillion times.  If I recall their deal was bbq ribs.  Boiled I think and slathered with juicy sauce, really a sin but we are from Minnesota.

Ate at The Woods Grill and Bar by St. Peter not long ago. It was excellent that night anyway and best of all I wasn't buying. One place on my bucket list and I gotta get there one more time before I croak is Ted and Gen's in Aldrich. Ate there many times in college when I was working as an undergrad at the U. In my early 20's then with a hollow leg and a tapeworm, The ribs were fantastic and they have their own large pit so no boiled ribs there. The turkey gizzard appetizers were to die for.  Make for a great weekend cruise in the Hawk. "Honey, how about let's drive 4 1/2 hours in an old car with no radio or AC for some great turkey gizzards? Whaddya say?" Have a feeling I know. ;)

Lakeside Super Club between New Prague and Montgomery on HWY 21 is pretty awesome.  Kids love the salad bar and soup.  Entrees are really good.  It's not like it's the best meal you ever had, but there's just something about the supper club atmosphere, the warm bread and butter before the meal, the salad bar, free unlimited garlic toast and the side potatoes in a brushed steel broiler dish.

Another great place that's not around anymore was the Coachlight in Le Sueur.  Every year the river would get high, it would flood, yet somehow they kept opening back up.  I got to think they had a mold problem after all that water damage, but the food was always good. You had to ring a doorbell when you got there and a host or hostess would open the door and greet you.  It was technically a set-up bar with no liquor license, but somehow you could always still order a drink, even if you didn't have a bottle behind the bar. :)  My dad used to have Lions' Club meetings there when I was really little and he'd always bring me home dinner mints while smelling like smoke and Segrams.  I grew to really like that smell because I associated it with the candy.

That's about it for the teef river area. The dell (or dells) in Argyle I've heard makes a pretty dang good steak. Is the one in brooks open for supper? Third base, I think.

I'm actually kind of a sucker for Supper Club ribs!!!!  Usually they're either boiled or slow cooked in an oven, but rarely smoked.  Good thick sauce on there... BOY OH BOY!  Anywhere but a upper club and I'd want smoked ribs, but oddly prepared ribs is just another thing that just seems right about supper clubs.

I can't afford supper clubs on my paultry union salary!:cry: tgere were a couple rrealky good supper clubs in the area years ago. One in cold spring, the blue heron and one in Richmond, jerries supper club. He turned them over to his kids the one in Richmond went down hill, one in cold spring did well. Different style of management. Then the one from cold spring took over the one in Richmond, did well. When they made there cash they sold it and now not so hot. There was also one in Avon. It since reopened.

The two in the Rochester area.... Old time places.

Branding Iron in Preston and Hubble House in Mantorville.

(Used to like 7th Rib south of Stewie but it went down a long time ago, along with the Fish House)

How about the Black Stallion on Hwy 52 N?

You misspelled Hubbell House. ;) Don't think I ever made it to the Black Stallion. Was usually at the House of Coates having a brew and a burger on my way back to TC. Lavender Inn was a decent spot in Faribault. Excellent prime rib. Alas, also closed. :(

Ah Little Oscar's. My Dad's favorite spot. He'd always stop there for a Rueben with fries and a glass of buttermilk. I imagine if I went in there and asked for a glass of buttermilk they'd probably look at me like I was from another planet. Probably do that anyway. :D Wasn't that the place that used to have all the little trucks painted up with the common trucking company colors at the time? My uncle used to stop at the Chateau. Little Oscar's was too blue collar for him.

Oscar's had the train running on tracks up by the ceiling, all over the restaurant. Also had the real caboose parked on south side of building. Had those painted trucks, too. First place to stop on the way to the Twins games, the NW Sportshow (still do that) or headed north to the lake...

Here are a few:

1. Norway Ridge in Ideal Township (Pequot Lakes).  When I was a kid my grandfather usually took the whole family there a couple of times per year.  Little smokehouse next to the restaurant.  They would hang chickens on coat hangers to smoke.

2. Anton's Fish and Whiskey in Waite Park.  Many a meal there during my college years.

3. Ox Yoke Inn in Lyndale.  (Not sure this is a true "supper club" but it's been around for a long time).  Beer cheese soup and frog legs.  The ribs are solid.

4. Al & Alma's in Mound.  Worked there in high school.  Good chicken and ribs combo.  My favorite menu item was one they served on the boat, but not in supper club - sliced kielbasa in BBQ sauce.

5. Big Fish Super Club in Bena.  Been protesting this place the last few years due to something the owner did that got him into legal trouble.  Fun place to go a few years back.  The owner would fry our fish and serve them with choice of potato and salad for cheap.

I will try to remember a few more.
