Good Morning!

Balmy 5 here with bright sunshine, squirrels and birds seem happy in the feeders and the cat enjoys watching and drooling, knowing that theres no chance of catching any. Something like me watching fishing shows. Better go fill the feeders and put some water in the bird bath. Have a good one and think positive.:)

Please do not watch the fishing shows during the dead of winter, Juneau. May be hazardous to your pocketbook. I've been watching them, and last week found myself outside the Lund dealer after looking online at the new rigs....wishful thinking. The ol' Rebel is gonna have to stay in the family, unless I win a lottery or something. It's still like brand new, so it'll work. Besides, if I did win a lottery and bought a new boat, the lakes would close up due to the impending drought we'd be sure to get.

Today is "helping others is the best way to help yourself" day.  Good morning.  I'm pretty good at that one so I figured I'd double my normal efforts.  It can just be a simple conversation with someone who may need that in their life.

The weekend talk above reminds me of the 5pm radio show out of Bemidji.  I don't know how many times I've been out on the deck at the cabin, tying some rigs up to head out fishing and the horn goes off on the radio and they  play "Everybody's Working for the Weekend" at 5pm.  It's funny how much a guys attitude can change in one minute, 459pm is way different than 5pm, especially on a Friday.  Unfortunately, cell phones have changed that a bit but I will dwell on the positive.

LLL picked up a hat trick last night, team won, was a very uncheap game by both sides.  The back checking was a little lacking by triple L.  It's nice to see your kid working a little harder but I do remember the ice sheet seemed uphill on the back check some nights.

Belle, the knife sheath swallower got quite a bit of loving last night at the hockey party.  One of the families had to put their old black lab female down recently and Belle became the surrogate to be scratched, rubbed, and loved.  Pretty sure she liked her role.

Admire the sunshine today fellas and Reb...I'd knock one of those tasks off of the list for sure.  There's more time tomorrow rather than stuffing it in all one day.  Good luck with the Dr appt.

Aha!! The ol' Wards Sea king! I still have a broken throttle lever with the ball on it from one of those, a memory from the one time just my Dad and I went up to Cass Lake, stayed at a cabin, and rented a little boat. The stupid lever broke off right away...but we finished the entire week going VERY slow. :D

Chilly one here this a.m. About 0 to - 4 at choretime depending on which thermometer you wanted to believe. At least the sun is out and that seems to make everyone a little cheerier. Man, breakfast is one of those meals I wish I had more time for. I like breakfast, don't get me wrong. The problem is getting time in the morning to make it. That and some dietary restrictions enter in. Weekends I like to do the cooked cereal thing, oatmeal, Malt O Meal, whatever. Dad always said oatmeal will stick with you all morning and he was right. During the week it's cold cereal, coffee cup to go and keep moving. I tend to make breakfast stuff for lunch or supper whenever it works. French toast is easy, over easy eggs, omelets, toast and jelly, sausage and bacon occasionally. Wife gets migraines triggered by cured meats and have to be careful on the cholesterol myself or so I am told. :P

Got rid of the office pest quickly. Still doesn't have his snow moved. He's heading to OH tomorrow so unlikely he'll make an appearance. Whew! Heading to the Gopher women's BB game tonight with some friends so looking forward to that. Mrs. Cheviot volunteered to do the chores so I can go. No lambs on the ground yet so chores aren't the headache they will be in a few weeks. My boat is a throwback too. A '77 or '78 model Blue Fin 14' with a '90 model 15 hp Evinrude longshaft. Nice for getting in and out of and around on puddles but not much for bigger water. It needs to see more action but finding time and energy , again.:(

My body is starting to wear out too. Got whacked in the knee by a ram a couple months ago. Not sure if the bump is just fluid or if there's a hunk of knee in there. Sure gets sore just like the left shoulder which has continued to deteriorate this winter. Had cortisone shots in that a few years back but have a feeling it's closer to bone on bone now. Trying to put a heavy coat on really sucks anymore. But like everyone else, bite my lip and ramble on.

Gee Dotch your modern with that motor, my main boat is a 14' 76 lund with a 82 Johnson 9.9- about 3 tanks of gas last me a year:D

I know the feeling of that bone on bone  Had to have a hip replaced a couple years ago and now the left shoulder needs something done with it.:P Oh well it's just a sign of some age and I'm glad I lived long enough to have these aches.

Shhhhhhh! Don't let the wife see that. We should get together and race sometime. Since you're an old farm guy, probably compare battle scars too! :D

being a self proclaimed genius I sold our old 14' Nadan that had a 78 9.9 Evinrude on it and got a 16 lund and an electric start 25 horse.  We use it at a small lake at my dads.  No trailer, can't hardly move it and the 25 horse is too much motor for that small lake.  When the battery is dead it works even worse.

Have you ever rowed a 16 footer with a 25 horse with oars made in 1975 that are too short?  Keep what ya got.

Listening to you OLD guys I am feeling pretty healthy ! I can't even call my 88 tracker with the 40 on it old compare to you guys... But there was a day when I used to run the old 12' Jon boat with a 7.5 hp air-cooled Clinton. Would lay down in the boat and steer it my leaning one way or the other, Pretty stupid now days but I did it all the time back in the day.

Steve "Reb" Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man!!!  I've got a really really good bottle of whiskey out in my garage a guy gave me for using my ice auger.  A really good friend would have just used the auger but I don't know this guy all too well.  First come first served, it's been out there for quite a while and "It's Free!!!"

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
