Leather boot sealant question

What do you guys like for sealing your leather hunting boots?

I've used sno seal for years and the only thing I find is that it wears off within a couple hours walking in long grass.

I want something that will help with waterproofing, keep the leather soft, and stay on longer.

Did you heat the sno seal to liquid and pour it onto/into the seams?

Otherwise I'd try Mink Oil. ALso, you can buy Goretex Socks at any major retailer if you have room inside your boots.

Beware of sno-seal and goretex. If you use sno-seal on gore tex boots it can/will clog the pores in the gore tex thus rendering your boots not breathable. They'll still be waterproof but the point of goretex is the breathability.

The sno seal on Gore-tex warning is a good one. When using sno seal on plain leather boots I heat the leather either with a hair dryer or stick the boots in the oven on low for awhile. You get much better penetration.
I now use Danner boot dressing which can also be used on Gore-tex boots. I have to reapply after about 3 days of hunting.

There is a product called Nikwax that is very good. The product comes in a couple different application like a spray, a wax, and and oil.
It is excellent stuff. It can be found at most Gander and REI stores. I think Cabela's carries it as well.

Liquid silicone on my Rocky GoreTex boots. I won't buy them if they're not GoreTex. And you have to reapply a couple times a season, especially if you're hunting in wet conditions.

For new boots, I first put a good coat of Neatsfoot oil and let them set for at least a day. Then I use a coat or two of Mink Oil. There is no permanent treatment, so keep up the treatment whenever needed.

yes, I do heat my boots before the sno seal, still wears off quickly though. Never thought of it clogging the gore tex. Any other thoughts on this?

I do have gore tex in both Rocky and Georgia boots and find they only last one season of being waterproof. Then, after so many flexes, they start to seap in moisture. All brands of boots do, it's just a matter of how many miles you have on them.

Still don't see a concensus on what really works. Keep the ideas coming.

On leather boots I use Sno-Seal but tall grass wears it off in no time. I use a boot with no insulation and wear wool socks. They get wet but at least there isn't a ton of water wicked up in insulation. I'm in water crotch deep a lot of the time so there isn't much I can do. The way I look at it's only water and as long as my feet stay warm and my boots don't weigh a ton thats fine.

Schnees boots out of Bozeman sells a Pine pitch blend. It works great on dark tanned leather. Check out schnees.com and I think its called Montana Pine Pitch blend.It's like $15 for it, but works EXCELLENT!!
