2015 Darkhouse Season

4 days till opener. You guys ready to hit the ice? Errrr... Hook some pontoons onto your house at least?

Last year some shallow lakes in the north country were ready by the 15th, and I know by the 27th we had 5" of clear ice on the big lakes, but with mid 50s happening we aren't making much headway so far this year (for those of you coming up for the Get-To-Gator, don't panic, 3rd River freezes about as fast as anything up here). All I know is now that my venny supply is re-upped, I have started turning an eye toward the lakes. I have a few goals this year and I am hoping some of you will try to join me (or create some goals of your own):

Introduce at least 1 new person to spearing. I have been successful at that more years than not. Nothing beats the excitement of watching someone see/spear their first fish.

Create a decoy style I haven't used before. I have something in mind that a buddy told me about and I will share if turns out (or even if it doesn't).

Spear at least 3 new lakes. I have no excuse to keep trying the same holes when there are so many lakes in my neck of the woods.

Those are the goals that come to mind for me. What say ya'll?

My huge goal is to get out more then I did last year, it was a rough year to say the least.  I hope to bring some new people out, my boss had some friends from California coming to town in January so I may take them out.  Since I moved this summer I really hope to get to some new lakes, I had a few favorites that were pretty close to me before so I need to find my new go to lake.  Maybe after 4 years of building I will finally finish my perm spear house to :D

My goals are pretty simple.

Get someone new to one of the GTG's.

Have the 5 tine challenge be a success. What I mean by success is that it's just a really fun event. That will hopefully turn it into a yearly tradition.

And as usual spend as much time as possible hanging out with friends.

It might be a slow winter for me at work. Lots of time may be spent in the shack.

my season was shot with my wife having cancer and losing her on Dec 27th.  but this year I have 2 people for sure that would like to try it so I'm looking forward to this season.

good luck to all this season!

Very sorry to hear about your loss. Wishing you the best this year and beyond.

My goals for this season are to try at least 2 new lakes this season. I would also like to find a place that I can leave my perm out and have a spot that I can go just for an hour or so depending on the day.

Like MJ I am also hoping for a good event with the 5-tune and a good turn out for our first banquet attempt.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
