3 blade vs. 4 blade fixed blade broadheads

Recommended Posts

What are the advantages and disadvantages for both?  And why?

I shoot arrows with 3 - 2" blazer vanes that are not offset, if that makes difference.

I'm thinking of trying the Wac 'em 4 blade 100 grain, since it has more cutting diameter then the 3 blade, but with a 4 blade you have more surface area so that might equate to less penetration.  So what way would you go?

Thanks for any feedback.

What flies true out of your bow is the head I would use ! I like expandable becuse they fly better with a larger cut , that's what I like not for everyone . But I did use 4 blade fix heads this year on my elk and it was a pass thur on the lungs , 465 grain arrow . If you want a 4 blade look at Slicktrick they are very tough !

The true benefit of a 4blade broadhead is more cutting surface and creating a larger wound channel. There really is no negative other than finding a bradhead that flys really well.

The slick-trick 4-blade is the gold standard in my book. There was some bad reviews of the Muzzy 4 blade when it came out. I didn't try it so I have no opinion.

My top 2 broadheads for deer are the Slick Trick magnum (4 blade) and the G5 striker (3 blade). Both fly awesome and both get the job done. The thing I like about the Slick Tricks is the 4 blade leaves a square hole in the side of the deer while the 3 blade exits and tends to close up. Every deer that was shot by the ST had a square hole in the side. Blood trails were amazing. Its what I use for all my deer/elk arrows now.

I shot the Stryker (3 blade) for years, and even though they flew good and killed 'em dead, I never was happy with the blood trails, this after shooting maybe a doz. deer with them.

I'm shooting the Slick Tricks (4 blade) this year and they fly awesome! I have taken one deer with them already, and though the blood trail was not great, she didn't go far. The hit was a bit high, so that could be cause for not much blood, the jury is still out. Still, the 4th blade should be better in the long run when it comes to blood trails.

Thanks for the responses, well I ended up getting the 4 blade Wac 'em heads they look really solid.  I did shoot them and they fly really good with my regular nocks, but when I put my nocturnal nocks on the same arrow they fly low and to the right at 20 yards...  I should say that I'm shooting Victory V6 400 arrows cut to 29.5".  I really want to get some better arrows since the ones I got after measuring them very by 1/4" in length and I noticed after doing a spin test with the new broadheads that on 2 of the arrows the head wobbles a little (I can put the same broadhead on a different arrow and it doesn't wobble), is there a way to straighten them out?  the inserts are glued in already.

That's a very good pint, I'm shooting a mission Endeavour set at 62 pound draw weight and a draw length of 28" (my arrows are cut to 29.5") I have a trophy taker drop away arrow rest. I only have 4 arrows left so I'm going to be buying some new ones, what spline and weight arrow would you recommend for my set up, I also have 100 grain field tips and broadheads.

For arrows I was thinking of the Carbon express pile driver or the new Muddy Blood sport arrows, but not sure what others to look at.  I've only deer hunted with this setup.

Thank you guys for all of your thoughts and feedback.

Gold Tip are hard arrows to beat ! Look at Expadition hunters or XT hunters in a 340 spine . That will give you around a 400 total weight , perfect blend of speed and energy . I gave up trying differnt arrow every time I ended up back with gold tip .

I've shot somewhere near 50 animals with different broadheads from two blade Razorheads, 3 blade Cabelas heads, 4 Blade Razorheads, etc.  To be honest, I had good and bad bloodtrails with them all.  I really can't say which have been better.  I've had deer hit with a 2 blade that hardly knew they were hit and died within 30 yards.  Some of my shortest bloodtrails were with Rocket Steelheads which i am currently using even though they are a very conservative cutting diameter.  So to be honest, I don't honestly think it matters between 3 or 4 blade heads.  In fact any head will work great if it's sharp and put in the boiler room.

I am a die hard slicktrick fan,I have been shhoting them for 7 years now. I have actually had alot of people on this forum switch over to them after my love for them.

I shoot the slicktrick mags which are a 1-1/8 cut. I would love to shoot the griz tricks however they start to fly goofy for me after 30 yards and they are a 1-1/4 cut. With that said I did try the exodus 3 blade 1-1/4 cut and they flew right with my mags to 60 yards however I had never used them and couldn't see passing up what I know the slicktricks will do for my elk hunt.
