Chasing

I have been training my 12mnth old pup quite a bit in the last few weeks. He is 12mnths old and this will be his first hunting season. While training he will point then when the bird flies he will chase. What is the best way to get him to hold and not chase. Adam

Adam- I could use a little more info, how far will he chase? Do you want the dog to be steady to shot? Does he chase a little then come back? These all make a difference as to how you should handle the situation.

He will chase a pretty good distance,I am using the tone button on my e-collar as the come command and he will just ignore it when he starts chasing. I would not mind if he just went a short distance and then came back. Thanks Adam

My brother who has had quite a few hunters uses shock collars, whether they are chasing the birds, or deer and other things. They learn very quickly this way, although some people are against using them. Good luck

ATM I had the same problem with my GSP. The shock collar did work but I had to do it every time, I hate doing that when his desire is to retrieve ASP. So I just let him chase,If he doesnt see it fall he comes back and gives me that look. The only real problem is there is sometimes other birds that break as he goes by. As long as your not doing field trials and he doesnt go real far after missed birds I say let him chase and retrieve. BRIAN

BDR, I get that look alot from dogs i've hunted behind. I have been trying to use the collar as little as possible. My dog is still just a pup with little experience I think with more time in the field and age he may slow down a little. Adam

Has anyone tryed to use the beep tone as a warning first, before the zap.
Basically so when the dog doesn't stop, or whoa, whichever command you use, you give em a warning tone and the dog will know what comes after that if it doesn't stop.

Dano2, I use mine strictly as the come command. I was hunting with a friend last fall and he spent the whole time shouting commands to his dog. I have him to the point where there is no verbal command for come I just press the tone button obviously as a pup he needs some reminding from time to time that the tone means to come now not when he wants but I have been really happy with the results. I think all the yelling my hunting buddy does to his dog will alert wild birds pretty quickly. Adam

Use a checkcord. Let the dog hit the end of it with enough force to drop her or spin her around. Heel her back to the place where she commited the offence and say "whoa" in a firm tone. Let the dog stand there for a while. Work more on whoa away from birds. Make the dog understand whoa means don't move under any circumstance.
