DonBo here. I have a busy spring planned. Opening weekend here in MN, I'll be taking a youth out on his first hunt. The second season, my 91 year old Dad will try to get his 3rd bird in 3 years.

Season D in Wisconsin, a buddy and I hunt hard for 5 days. We both have 2 tags.

I've got an archery tag for the metro area here in Minnesota. I'm also doing a mentored women's hunt for a long weekend in mid May. Also hope to find a little time for fishing sometime during all this. What a great time of year huh?

Anyfish2 checking in.

My game plan for this year goes like this, opening day will be devoted to getting my daughter an opportunity. The first day the last three seasons have essentially been a slam dunk, so with a great deal of hope it will continue this year for my daughter. For the remainder of the season I will attempt to get my season A bird.

after season one it is all about my son and daughter get a bird. Hopeing to spend a lot of time In the woods and fields throughout April and May.

Season A 507

Motley/staples area.

Good luck team 3.

Dillon here. Good luck to all and have a safe hunt! I think I won the youth turkey division last year. I hope it works out for me this year also. I am a year older and better on the calls. Cant wait to go. First season in 501 is when myself, brother, and aunt and uncle go. Not to mention my grandpa Jeff. I watch the forum here and we have a good team on here again this year.

123fish checking in. I will be hunting southwest mn. 504 B for my season. Possibly take a buddy out in one of the later seasons if things work out. Just got a new black lab puppy a few weeks ago so scouting has been nonexistent. I will try to get on something in the next few weeks. Anyone have suggestions for a team name?

We've all checked in, and it looks like we have a great team this year! Lot's of you are hunting the first couple seasons so we should have a bunch on the board before many other teams even get out of the gate. smile

I've posted all the dates we'll be hunting, so we can keep track of who's out and about.

Dillon, since you are a youth, you can hunt the entire season if it doesn't happen for you the first weekend?

How about throwing out some other names? Not sure if "6DAWPDC" will fly, but hey, I'm good with anything!

Kevin, I've seen some of your calls, and they look great!

"Legion of Boom" works for me, even though two of us are archers (I will be using the shotgun in WS). Walleye, as the only one who's archery only, what do you think?

"6DAWPDC" Dudes Awaiting Wandering Poultry to get Deadly Close!

Anything else? Maybe we should let the youngster choose something. Dillon?

So the landowner of one of the properties I have permission on called me this morning. He said there was the biggest turkey he's ever seen strutting around on his property this morning. Think I'm going to get up early and start some serious scouting this weekend. Anyone else?

Yep, heard my first gobble of the year Saturday morning too. Also saw a hen getting bred, a first for me.

Had a really good scouting trip yesterday. 40 birds on one spot. 40! Also saw 6 toms in one small woodlot I hunt often for deer. Thought this would be a last chance, fall back spot, but there were a bunch of birds here and the landowner told me she's had them in her driveway often lately.

Come on guys, FIRE UP!!! Half you you get to hunt in just 6 days. Getting excited? What are you seeing for activity on your properties? Any new gadgets or tactics?

Name? "Legion of Boom"? Unless I hear otherwise, I'm going to change it.

Let's hear for you all.

Legion of boom is fine with me DonBo.

Scouting has been very limited for as I am running kids to activities and working a bunch. Not much for reports from me.

Will try to make a concerted effort over tbe next 7 days and get a last minute set.

Very excited to tell the truth, always am though, the chase will be more traditional this year without the snow we've had the last couple of seasons. Not looking forward to picking hundreds of ticks, love the chase all the same.

Was out scouting Wednesday and saw plenty of birds but didn't hear any gobbling. On a plus side we saw 8 groups of birds that had 2-8 hens in each group and each group had at least 1 tom/jake strutting. Boys are ready!! getting pumped! Hopefully my mom will have her bird down by 8 am wednesday smile Let's go with legion of boom. Mom will be firing the boom stick Wednesday

Finally made it out to scout the morning roost, but of course I ran late and birds were on the ground at about 6:25. I found one large group of 21, 5 toms, 2 jakes and 14 hens.

I also saw 2 lone hens on the far south of property and one lone LARGE tom. He is probably in the mid 20lb range with a 11"+ beard .

Going to try and roost some birds in the evenings and make a set Tuesday. Wednesday is all about my getting my daughter any legal bird so I will probably set up for the group going to thier strutting field.

At least have some numbers to work with.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
