As spring seems to be getting closer and closer, I am interested in getting a bait caster setup for largemouth. Ideally, I would like to spend less than $150 or less. Is it better to buy a combo or rod and reel separate? Any advice on brands ect...also, medium or medium heavy? Thx

You will get the best deal on rods and reels at the Northwest sport show, a lot to choose from and always great prices. Agree, Lews and a nice medium heavy fast action rod and you should be set.

I am right-handed and I always buy left-handed baitcasters. That way, when I cast with my right hand, I don't have to shift the rod from one hand to the other to start cranking. Just like a spinning reel. Much better control, especially when the bait hits the water. Try it, you'll probably like it.

+1,000!!! I don't understand why more people don't. It is hard to find left handed baitcasters but Lew's has quiet a few to pick from.

I'm right handed and use a right handed reel. I do what feels comfortable. To me the extra milla second you get switching over hands isn't that big of a deal. Also you can just learn to cast or flip left handed which isn't that hard.

Also a righty that uses LH retrieve. I can't imagine setting the hook and fighting fish with my left hand. And working a jerkbait or a frog all day? There's no way I could do it.

To the OP, my suggestion would be a Shimano Citica.

You are going to get the best deal if you go combo. Cabelas usually has some great deals if you get one of their rods with a name brand reel. Or as someone else mentioned, sportshow will find you some great deals. If this is your first combo, I would look at a 7' or 6'6"MH, that to me is most versatile.

I cast right handed and reel right handed but pitch with the rod in my left hand as that's when I feel its more important to be ready right away. When it comes to casting anything overhand I can switch the rod from right hand to left hand mid-cast just fine, no time lost. Not that Im truly worried about the fraction of a second.

Anyways, just get whatever, right or left, you're most comfortable with.

Definitely dont buy a combo. Buy whatever reel you like, not what a combo limits you to and then buy a rod to match. Spend the majority of your budget on the reel. Id say whichever reel you decide on should have an MSRP of at least $100. The sports show is definitely the way to go as far as getting the most bang for you buck.

I like the feel of the new Lews LFS Speed Spool. It's also a little lighter than the original model. They are $99 bucks, which is a deal for an aluminum framed reel. I'm sure you can find them on sale somewhere. Citicas would be a decent choice too.

For cheaper rods I like the Cabelas Pro Guide Bass models, Shimano Sellus, or Fenwicks. The Cabelas bass rods go for $60 bucks, but usually they go on sale for 30% off every now and then.(actually on sale right now online.) The ZX's are nice too, but $40 dollars more.

I think I reel right-handed cause that's what all the old zebco 202's and 33's were that I used as a kid. Just stuck with it with my first baitcasters, cause that's the side the handle should be on!!

Good ideas on rod and reels that should fall in your price range. Check several out yourself too find what YOU like. As far as which side the handle should be on? Try both and see what feels good to you. It's a personal preference. grin

I tried to teach myself the left hand reel thing quite a few years ago, bought several reels and gave it a great go at it. Nope, not for me, sold them all. I can cast left handed, or cast right handed and switch hands while the lure is in air. I know nobody asked, but I said it anyway.. LOL

Thanks to you guys, I got the right combination picked out for my fishing. I have picked out a MH with a fast action ect... If I plan to mainly use with texas rigs and jigs (not around heavy cover) what type and pound line should I consider.

      we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.

      I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.

      reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
