jfish21
I am in the market for a new auger and have done some research on the Ion electric auger and pretty much every review I have seen is positive. Anyone have any bad experiences with the ION auger?
bowhuntermitch
The only bad reviews I've seen have been on the new 10" model. Seems it really struggles to cut holes with the increased diameter. Oh, and people not keeping their batteries warm....thats a no-brainer to me though.
JoeMX1825
The only valid point Ion haters have is what will current Ion owners do in 5-10 years when their battery goes bad because they are in a sealed proprietary case... I guess my answer to that is I hope a shop like Batteries Plus can replace the worn out cells inside and seal it back up... I love mine, but I'm realistic the battery won't last forever...I guess we'll see in however many years it takes the battery to go bad...or maybe in 5-10 years we'll have a portable lazer that just melts an 8" hole in the ice and all augers are obsolete..who knows
JollyJoker
I have an Ion w/reverse that I use everyday in my perm house and don't know if there is anything better than this. Don't have to clean any slush out of the holes is great. The only bad thing is the cheap blade cover that broke on it as soon as it was real cold out. It is made out of a very hard plastic with no give to it.
Bureaucrat
I've been 100% pro-Ion since I bought mine. Still am today. My original battery is still operating like brand new. I bought a second one months later to have extra juice on the ice. The second one isn't working quite right. I'm getting ready to make a claim on that one. We'll see how it goes... If your battery goes bad in five years, you've gotten your money out of it. How much gas would it take to drill for five years?
jfish21
How long have you had your Ion, Bureaucrat?
dj2quick35
I used my 10" up on red last week and had no issues. As the shavings built up I just lifted to clear and then it was back to cutting. A slush bucket is a must tho because the 10" makes a lot of shavings while drilling. After breaking through it was nice to hit reverse and clean out the hole. Had the house down and 6 holes drilled and cleaned out in no time using the reverse function.

I agree with the battery should last many years, but i'm talking about what happens if Ion goes out of business or they change the battery design completely...Augers like the Strikemaster Electra are more futureproof because they use a standard battery design that will be around forever... Mike Stark
You will be happy with an ION. This is my first season with it and I really like it. The 10in is nice in the permanent shack. It is slower than then the 8in but gets the job done. The 8in is sweet for running and gunning. Just put the battery on and press the button. No warming up the auger before drilling holes. BRULEDRIFTER
If your battery goes bad in five years, you've gotten your money out of it. How much gas would it take to drill for five years? That's over $100/yr for a stinkin auger! That's insane! Not a very good investment, IMO. I'll stick to my SM Laser with a chipper blade I bought for about $300 almost 10 years ago. While I don't cut as many holes as a lot of guys, I can't imagine burning more than 5 gals of gas a year, tops. Even @ $3/gal that only $15/season, plus a few dollars for oil that puts you at $20-30/season. (and this is being very generous.... I'll spend a 1/4 of that per season). Hawg
Sorry but the math comes out to $25-$30/month for a 5 year battery replacement. PS, I have a typewriter for sale if you really like old technology.
JoeMX1825
You're missing the point, we spend the extra $$ for the convenience factor of the electric auger, no pull starts, no oil, no gas, no summerizing, no hassles....extra batteries can be purchased at a substantial discount in the March/April clearance season... My only point was what happens if Ion closes it's doors down the road, the battery is proprietary. I love my Ion, money well spent imo. dj2quick35
I'm sure by the time my battery runs out there will be something new and better out there that I will have to have

PS, I have a typewriter for sale if you really like old technology. I think this is some fuzzy math, Hawg. Or maybe I'm lost....wouldn't be the first time! An ION battery is $150, so it would be about $3/month for a 5 year replacement schedule. When I talked with ION a few weeks back, they said 800-1000 charge cycles can be expected. I use mine a lot, but I still probably only charge it 50 times per year at the most.

How did we go from a $150 battery replacement every 5 years, to a complete $500+ auger replacement every few (3) years? Must be that 'new math'.... JoeMX1825
I agree there's some crazy math going on there...anyways the numbers look even better when you consider the discounts on spare batteries in the spring. I found a couple last year in the $100 range..
eagle_3464
What kind of deal might a guy get for the complete auger on a spring clearance? That is of course if there are any still available.
JoeMX1825
I've seen them between $400-$430 online in March/April, there's a few on c list right now under $400 (update-looks like the sub $400 Ion's sold, they go fast)
Hawg
You're right. I meant 25-30/year.
