Building a better Ice Scoop

I bought one of these late season last year and it works incredibly well. When it was auger extension time, I could have a hole fishable in one pass and completely clear of all ice in two passes. All of my buddies that have fished with me have now bought one because it really does work well and saves a lot of time.

I know how its easy to be skeptical with a lot of these “new” products, but I can honestly say it works exactly like you see in the video. I’m curious to see how it works when the ice is 30”. I expect the same result just maybe a little heavier to pull up. I had someone tell me it looks clunky, but the reality is that it folds flat and actually packs away easier than a regular scoop.

Used it last year at my skid house with 30 inches of ice. Its works OK, you need to rotate it right and left when removing from hole. Still need to finish with a scooper. With skim ice a scooper is better.

Almost want to tie it to your wrist so you dont drop down the hole.

I rate it 8 out of 10. Will not replace a scooper.

I have two of these in 8", Works great when using my dad's 2 stroke Lazer, but for some reason the 8" lazer my Electra came with punches a slightly smaller hole and the skimmer plate doesn't really fit. I'm sure I could take care of this by trimming my skimmer plate down just a little bit all the way around, but I have been reluctant to do it.

Out of curiosity I checked there site and they sell just the skimmer plates so you CAN interchange sizes on the pro model. I am happy to hear this as I have a 10" auger now and for $4.99 a piece (plus $8 shipping) It's cheaper than a whole new skimmer.

I can see having it with about a foot to two feet of ice shavings and just like in the video hitting something and poof its all over the floor of my fish house. Where a slush inhaler prevents that from happening.

Too bad I don't Facebook or I'd try to win it!

I saw those at FF when I was Christmas shopping and thought they probably worked really slick. I didn't get one though.

Darren, thanks for posting about products you find genuinely worthwhile for us to try. cool I know you've gone through a lot of gear and you've always kept your opinions and recommendations straight up!

I was talking to one of the guys from deep freeze they redesigned this years model by adding the small bar of plastic across each of the holes. the ones without this added feature were known to leave a little more slush then this one does. I have been tempted to get a 6 inch and 8 inch model to try but just haven't pulled the trigger yet, still might thou.

DTro, lookd interesting for sure. Last year you did a program on a headlamp. I did uy that and it is a truly great product and performs very well. you can zoom to spot tightnfor tieing jigs or widen it out for toal hole coverage. thanks for that tip

same here! That was a great headlamp. Not in the market for a scoop but keep the reviews coming.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
