My new spear

My new spear I picked up today. Anybody know anything about it. It was made in Rice Mn. It has a knurled handle with a screw in cap for securing the rope. Seems like a well made spear.

The blacksmith in Rice makes them. My brother knows him.

Do they still make them? I'm guessing this one's about 20 years old.

I asked my brother and he said he still makes spears. The business in Rice has been in their family for years.

I think there are a few people out there that have a similar design with the knurled handle. My Fabeck spear is like that and when I got mine a couple years ago he said it was one of the last ones he was doing. There is still a picture if you search bigmaple.

The guy that makes the spears is Jim Voigt, he and his brother own Rice Blacksmith Saw & Machine in Rice, MN 320-393-2169.

Jim is My dads cousin and yes he still makes the spears. He only makes so many each year, the last time my dad talked to him he had a waiting list. Me, my dad, brothers and nephews all have spears made by Jim. His spears are hand forged and balanced. My spear is 22yrs old and the last one to buy one was my nephew about 5 or 6yrs ago.

If anyone is in need of a good quality "made the old fashion way" spear, you should check him out. sorry I don't have a price on the spears, mine was a gift and I have never asked the other guys what they paid for theirs.

Thanks for the info MCI. The sticker on the guard has James,Joe and Al as the proprietors. And the area code is 612 not 320. I think it was early 90s when that changed, so I'm guessing it's at least that old.
