haleysgold
So, I was going try Thirdeyes Buckboard Bacon recipe. The stores around here don't carry maple sugar.Anybody know what I can substitute it with??I did send Thirdeye an email so maybe he'll have a suggestion too.I was going to just get the Hi Mt seasoning but the local "Goose Mt" store didn't have it.I'm not having much luck, am I... pushbutton
If needing it now would just throw some sugar in a bag and slowly and as evenly try to add maple flavoring..... shake the carp out of it. Suppose a food processor would work too. Then lay it out on a cookie sheet till it drys. It might get a little clumpy, but would think you could easily work it smooth again. haleysgold
When you say "Maple Flavoring"...you mean like maple extract? And how would I know how much...I can see that being easy to OD on...I think I saw that in the store.Or Maple Syrup? That would need a while to dry out tho.
delcecchi
If by SE mn you mean in the vicinity of Rochester, you might call the co-op food store on about 4th st and 1st ave sw. Beautiful new store and they carry a lot of natural and organic stuff and local stuff. (I could be off a block or two on the location)

pushbutton
When you say "Maple Flavoring"...you mean like maple extract? And how would I know how much.... Yes, and ultimately no clue ......until it is mapely Glad Del came through for ya! Got to love those little "hippie stores". Sometimes spendy, but try to support them because ultimately you get what you pay for. Also, Del is right for calling out the little quaker dude, will never go back to quick oats.... delcecchi
This place has basic old fashioned oats, thick oats, really thick oats, steel cut oats, along with rolled rye and a bunch of other stuff in bulk at good prices. Nice new store too. Some items are cheaper than at supermarket, particularly specialty items like various beans etc.
haleysgold
Really cool store. While I was there I picked up Steel cut oats for a dish we make called Gritwurst. You grind up pork with it and fry it crisp. The wife is stopping after work to look their thick oatmeal and the wasabi peas you mentioned.I'm sure she'll find a boat load of other stuff too. Also bringing home 2 of their turkey/bacon wraps for supper !!I know I'll be going back ! delcecchi
OK, what did she get? Today I got wasabi peas and garlic sesame sticks for our canoe trip, and some peanut butter and colorado peaches. Those in the Rochester area, give it a try. Peoples food co-op at 6th st sw and 1st ave.
pushbutton
Went to our local co-op and picked up bulk granola fixins and cooked up a really cheap, easy, and tasty cereal or snack. Actually had a german hippie morning as had to kraut up a couple split cabbage from the garden.......
haleysgold
OK, what did she get? Well let's see...the thick oats, wasabi peas (they're a little much for me to eat plain...might have to mix 'em with something else), little sesame snack things, steel cut oats, grain crackers and a few other things that I can't recall what they were...oh yeah, 2 of the Turkey/bacon wraps(they were ok, I've had better). It's got some really interesting stuff. We'll go back I'm sure.
